Re: Just been asked to sign into our own WiFi?!

“No I didn't check the log - nor the colour of the router”

Potentially the most important diagnostic actions you could take … but instead you continue to focus on “logging into WiFi” when in fact, you are already logged onto WiFi (the SSID).

The logon you are encountering is to the router when there is no up link.

The enforcement of https:// (and the consequential security certificate debacle with browsers) arises from EU device security regulations.  In context it is utter nonsense… like much of the EU regulations.

The “at that time of night” (not specified) could potentially be consequential to BTOR network maintenance if after midnight.

Re: Just been asked to sign into our own WiFi?!

@7up

It is clear to me what you think has happened, I have had reread of the first post.

You had an outage of some sort

The outage resulted in a message "Sign in to PLUSNET-38C3CQ" with a Secure Connection Required message when attempting to connect to the hub

So at this point you have a WiFi connection to the Hub as you would not have seen the Secure Connection Required message.

or the next screen "Your connection is not private" this message appeared as you were being redirected to the Hub Home page to allow access the Hub management screen.

So this is the usual what happens when the internet connection drops, just the Hub needs a https connection now.

"Can someone explain why they choose to attack our network please?"

This is where the event log is very important to be viewed rather than jumping to a factless conclusion.

You then got bogged down with certificates and you having to sign on to the WiFi when the first screen posted was not that request.

The subject of certificates has been covered with the link I provided post #33 and in post #7

Did other devices on your network recovery without the need of any intervention after the outage?

I'm not particularly bothered by the connection not secure thing..

What bothers me is the potential that I may have to click that [-Censored-] android "Sign in to Wifi" thing every time my phone loses it's wifi connection to it. EG if i come home from work, am I going to have to "Sign in" via the android prompt again? Am I going to have to do that every single day when the router loses the wifi connection between itself and my phone?

What happens to devices that don't support that captive "Sign in" like my ip cameras or the telly? - one of those cameras was still messed up yesterday morning and required a reboot. As I couldn't get logged into it I was unable to stop the SD card in it and those things don't like sudden power loss.

What needs to happen in this thread is people who were not there, telling me what happened and how I'm wrong on this, that, x, y, z.

I was there, I saw what happened and I did describe it. I never said there was no wifi connection, I said I was asked to sign into it which has then been disputed multiple times 🙄

And yes, plusnet have chosen to cause some sort of attack. When you are forced to "Sign in" to your own wifi, that is a form of denial of service. Then I'm greeted with an alarming message that it's unsecure. No email has come to us regarding this that I know of..

"What bothers me is the potential that I may have to click that effing android "Sign in to Wifi" thing every time my phone loses it's wifi connection to it."

You shouldn't have to - provided your phone retains the correct Wi-Fi credentials. It's only if you need to log on to the router Hub Manager itself, using the Hub Management Admin password (not Wi-Fi password). Now, even if only to see its status; previously only for router 'Advanced settings'.

"What happens to devices that don't support that captive "Sign in" like my ip cameras or the telly?"

Such devices don't need to log on to the Hub Manager, only to the router's Wi-Fi signal. Hub management is carried out by the human user.

"I never said there was no wifi connection, I said I was asked to sign into it which has then been disputed multiple times 🙄"

But, from the OP, you were being asked to sign in - over an existing Wi-Fi connection - to the Plusnet Hub 2 Manager.

"Plusnet Hub Two Manager"
"Access to the Hub Manager now requires a secure HHTPS connection"

This has been so since the last Hub 2 firmware update in June 2026.

Firmware version: v0.11.01.11071-PN
Firmware updated: 10-Jun-2026

It was widely discussed on the forum at the time: https://community.plus.net/t5/My-Router/Plusnet-Hub-2-new-firmware-forcing-https/td-p/2048097

Is this not down to the handset not the Hub? The Hub would only reject a WiFi connection if the network password is wrong

On your handset in Settings check in 'Network details' for PLUSNET-38C3CQ check 'Auto-connected' is selected.

@7up

And therein is the crux of the issue you appear not to be getting.  If your phone can connect to the router to get this prompt, it has NOT lost its connection to the router over Wi-Fi.

As @Dan_the_Van made clear (at least once) in the reported scenario if you had a WIRED device connected to the router (NOT using Wi-Fi) you would see the exact same message.  Whilst you persist in calling this a "sign into Wi-Fi issue" you are not going to progress the real problem.  For once and for all "WiFi" is NOT the right term for the end to end connection from your device to the internet, so stop talking about logging in to WiFi (regardless of what screens might say).  WiFi (SSID) login connects you to the local router (which with an already configured device is totally transparent) ... from where you might indeed need to login to use the upstream internet (broadband) connection.  That is NOT logging in to WiFi.

It is evident that there are issues with the connection between the router and the internet (the broadband service), but you steadfastly refuse to answer key questions which are important to delivering the right advice to help you.

  1. What broadband service do you have: ADLS / FTTC / SoGEA / FTTP
  2. When you get the log into the router prompt on https://192.168.2.254 what colour are the lights on the router - if you want meaningful help you need to find out, regardless of perceived difficulty
  3. Log into the router and inspect the connection status and report the connection stats - as advised, ignore the troublesome security warnings - from Home and Basic - Status
    Screenshot 2026-08-22 113700.pngScreenshot 2026-08-22 114500.png
  4. The look at the helpdesk under advanced options Technical log
    Screenshot 2026-08-22 114800.png

If you feel this is not moving you forwards, then contact support by telephone and ask them to review the recent disconnections of your broadband internet service.  DO NOT say you've got problems logging into WiFi ... it will send them in entirely the wrong direction.

Good Luck!

EDIT:

Long post preparation crossed with @Dan_the_Van 's reply.  If the Android is really asking for the SSID passphrase for the router, that is a very different issue to the one discussing the logging into the router administration page and the encountered security certificates.  However WiFi connectivity setting would be in the devices network settings, not something encountered when using a browser.

@Townman here you go again telling me how it is at my end of the cable and attempting to re-write what I've suffered and am enquiring with PLUSNET about.

Stop derailing the thread.

Well if the hubs firmware has been updated and suddenly my phone has started asking me to "Sign in" what does that tell you? - It's not my phone but a change on the hub itself.

I've been configuring network connections for years.. I'm fully aware of the phones settings - but thanks for trying to help.

@7up

For what it's worth, I gave up with the Hub Two when I moved to Full Fibre, main reason would be the Hubs GUI, missing features in Access Control, a DHCP server frontend that didn't work as required, no WiFi 6. three LAN ports and some other features

It would still be handy if you could share the event log?

Indeed you can lead an old horse to water ... but you cannot make it drink.

Time to leave @7up to what they think is best whilst they work it out somehow or another for themselves.  They are certainly not disposed to do anything which might be slightly helpful to themselve, by providing factual information in place of their confused perceptions of reality.

The router demanding a login is NOT a WiFi issue - it is an uplink issue.  To help with the uplink issue, we need the information requested by several contributors, not the back-biting we are seeing.  Stop calling this something it is not and supply the information requested ... or just keep stewing!

Here's the Sun reader's version ...

I NEVER SAID IT WAS. However when the wifi connection was re-established, that's what happened - a sign-in prompt that has never been needed previously. Dear lord, can you not actually get that into your head? - Are you going to drop it or not?

The connection wifi connection was was re-established within seconds, the upstream within a couple of minutes - that's a BT/Plusnet problem. There's NOTHING that YOU can do about that, only Plusnet or BT.

The router demanding a login IS the issue I am however grumbling about. I do not want this feature nagging me or anyone else in the house just because it lost it's connection. Is that simple enough for you to understand @Townman ?

All the way through this thread you've been obsessed with the wifi connection instead of the nagging "Sign in" that I was actually posting about. It is not needed and most certainly is not a feature.

Now with regards to your sarcastic image, there was no need. As I've said I've been network programming for years. Your posting of that only proves that you are intent on causing trouble within this thread.

@Mav please would you remove Townmans replies?

Not sure this is possible;  any device connecting to the Hub during an outage will get the redirect to the Hub two management GUI. It's written in the firmware.

This is NOT new as I've seen the same with a Hub One years ago, with the Hub two in one instance my  Alexa Echo Show displayed the message.

Maybe consider a 3rd party router which handles outages differently.

Re: Just been asked to sign into our own WiFi?!

@7up

This is the way Plusnet routers have behaved for many years.  Arguably this is better than nothing at all for it is a clear indication that something is wrong with the connection and needs to be investigated by somebody.

You remain focussed on the wrong end of the issue.  The login prompt is NOT the issue requiring focus - it does nothing more than indicate that something needs to be investigated, which when resolved, no one will see these router login prompts.  Logging into the router is the first stage in the investigation, it gives access to the information which has been requested of you.  When you see these prompts, put down the phone and log into the router using device with a reasonably large screen which allows you to inspect and gather the information requested.

Are you going to supply the information that so that you might be assisted to bottom out the cause of the necessity to login to the router?  For the avoidance of doubt in the context of the login prompt, this logging in WILL NOT GET YOU CONNECTED to the internet.
