I don't recall ordering a router with my account at any time, I seem to recall declining the offer last renewal but...
I've been using a Draytek Vigor 2830Vn for years with little trouble until last night when it started rebooting at five minute intervals.
I've tried another identical 2830Vn with the same results.
Out of interest I tried leaving it on with PPPoA disabled and it stayed running.
I'm speculating that the last firmware update for it is now too old and maybe something that's running now breaks it.
Right now I've switched to a "Sagemcom" router that says Plusnet on it, probably came from a car boot sale, and probably also obsolete but it isn't crashing every five minutes?
I think I should be "entitled" to a new Plusnet router but how do I go about ordering it?

There's no 'entitlement' as such. You are normally offered a router for the cost of P & P when you re-contract. If you have recontracted recently and didn't take the offer , then you can try calling Customer support and they will likely offer to send one for the P & P cost.

Did you change the PSU as well as the router ? I'd be surprised if 2 routers are faulty. Is it actually rebooting or is it just losing DSL sync ?

Regarding "There's no 'entitlement' as such. " That's why I put "entitled" in quotes. I've no problem with paying the P&P, and I get that I can't keep demanding new hardware but I've only ever had one router from Plusnet and that was two decades ago and I had to pay at the time.
I'm also contemplating buying a newer Draytek, I like Draytek routers, just not so keen on the list price but they do turn up secondhand.
Changed the PSU too, I've known enough PSUs fail or go unreliable through age. Unfortunately both PSUs are quite old but one's been in use and the other not.
I tried sync-only, no connection and it ran steadily. With a connection after a while the activity light stopped then there's a loud click and the unit's run-time resets to zero.
It seems to only fail when it has a PPPoA session up. Paranoid theory is there's an exploit that's being scanned for and the router is failing safe. Cynical theory is its just a service update and some new kind of network traffic breaks it like how changes to DHCP broke lots of routers years ago. Alternatively maybe dry capacitors but if so then why are two routers affected simultaneously.
I don't really want to give up on them so I'm thinking about putting one into "modem mode" and having the other one act as router to see which is affected. On the other hand they are properly obsolete now and someone said they were too old to handle a full fibre service if/when I upgrade, so it is probably time to move on.

They do, in fact I have two 2830s lying around that you are welcome to. They haven't been powered on for at least 3 yrs but they worked when last used. You need to collect from NG10 though...

They are pretty obsolete now, they will max out at around 100Mb throughput on the WAN port (I know, I've tried!) so unless you are only thinking of FF74 then you will be restricted.

That specific 2830Vn model is optimised to help VoIP phone calls work over an ADSL connection.
- Are you still USING a home phone, either normal Openreach voice landline, or via the router's VoIP sockets ?.
- Regardless of whether you use the home phone or not, is your landline rental with Plusnet or a different ISP ?
- Have you used the Broadband Availability Checker to see whether WBC FTTP from Openreach is available ?
- Have you used the ThinkBroadband postcode checker, to see whether any AltNet FTTH providers can serve you ?
- Have you used the Ofcom Availability Checker to see whether there are any other 'Networks in your area' ?

Given that there isn't much you can do with your router regarding the attack highlighted by @Ian06
as the 2830Vn firmware hasn't had an update since 2018.
Can I suggest you look in your Plusnet "Member Centre" and see whether you still have access to the "Broadband Firewall"
If you do, make sure it is set to "High" or "Block common ports"- whichever gives most protection (read the help).
That should reduce the chances of the remote attacker getting through to your unpatched router.

It would also be worth ensuring that all methods of remote access are disabled (i.e http, https, ftp, telnet, etc)
and that the TR069 feature is disabled too.
Since yesterday, March 22, 2025, there have been reports of a widespread issue affecting DrayTek routers in the UK, with some ISPs and users noting connectivity problems starting around 9:28 PM. Although specific details about the attack mechanism are not fully detailed in available sources as of March 23, 2025, I can provide an informed analysis based on recent vulnerabilities and attack patterns targeting DrayTek routers, which could align with this timeframe.
One likely mechanism involves the exploitation of known vulnerabilities in DrayTek Vigor routers, particularly those that remain unpatched. For instance, vulnerabilities like CVE-2024-51138 (a stack-based buffer overflow in the TR069 STUN server) and CVE-2024-51139 (an integer overflow in the CGI parser handling HTTP POST requests) were disclosed earlier in 2025. These flaws allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code without authentication by sending specially crafted requests. The TR069 vulnerability, for example, could be triggered by an unauthenticated request to the router’s STUN server, potentially leading to full system compromise if the service is enabled. Similarly, the CGI POST flaw could enable heap overflows by manipulating the "Content-Length" header, resulting in remote code execution (RCE).
Given the timing—starting late on March 22—this could indicate a coordinated attack leveraging such vulnerabilities, possibly exacerbated by a new exploit or a variant of existing ones (e.g., those used by the Mirai botnet, which has historically targeted DrayTek devices). Posts on X and reports from ISPs like Zen Internet suggest a "nationwide issue" affecting DrayTek routers, hinting at a possible botnet or distributed attack. The Mirai botnet, known for incorporating DrayTek exploits (as noted in X posts from mid-March 2025), could be a candidate, using malformed packets or exploit chains to crash or hijack routers, leading to connectivity loss.
The mechanism likely involves:
1. **Initial Exploitation**: Attackers send malicious requests (e.g., via TR069 or CGI endpoints) to unpatched routers exposed to the internet, exploiting buffer overflows or command injection flaws.
2. **Payload Delivery**: Once access is gained, a payload could install malware, such as a botnet client, or disrupt router functionality (e.g., denial-of-service by crashing the device).
3. **Network Impact**: Compromised routers either stop routing traffic correctly or are used to propagate the attack, affecting downstream connectivity.
Since many DrayTek routers (over 700,000 globally, per 2024 reports) have exposed web interfaces and outdated firmware, the attack could exploit this widespread vulnerability surface. The sudden onset suggests either a zero-day exploit or rapid weaponization of a recently patched flaw, catching users who haven’t updated firmware off guard.
Without real-time forensic data specific to March 22, this remains speculative but aligns with known attack vectors and current sentiment on X about DrayTek issues. For confirmation, users should monitor official DrayTek advisories or ISP updates, as the situation is evolving as of 9:31 AM PDT today.

FWIW I had some plans to experiment with VoIP for years but never really got round to it, so the interface was largely left unused. By the time I actually had a VoIP server to connect to I also had access to a mobile app so having a home "hot line" lost its appeal.
The router puts two VoIP connections on one socket, funnily enough I've never seen the proper splitter for it.

I'm sure Plusnet would let you have a new router if you haven't had one for a while. It's also probably not a bad time to recontract as you may avoid the 2025 price increase.
I can't see your router on the Draytek product firmware download list so it's probably time for a replacement.
If you find the Plusnet router limiting after the Draytek the older (but still supported) DSL Draytek models go for not much second hand.

No it is a terrible time to re-contract, because @oliverab is probably on ADSL (as the 2830Vn can't do FTTC)
All Plusnet customers on ADSL still in contract at the end of 2025 are likely to get screwed over when PSTN is switched off.
I'm waiting for @oliverab to answer ALL the questions in Reply #5 to be able to point him in the right direction.
Anyone out there on ADSL - DO NOT RENEW your contract during 2025 until Plusnet clarify what will happen in 2026.
