Hub2 and Android Wifi Internet connectivity

Hi all,

I tried to Google to see if anyone has come across this but I only found old posts about firmware verisons. The scenario is also very strange and very specific.

The background:

I have a Plusnet Hub2, with the latest firmware version using both Wifi 2.4 and 5. I have a total of 20 or so devices connected to. Some of these are passive users such as smart plugs/lights, printers, TVs and some are active users such as IP Cameras, mobile phones and laptops.

All my devices work with the router without complaint and bar one TV that likes to forget it's Wifi details. The Wifi works flawlessly across the home with little degradation in signal as the router is as central as it can be in the home. Using a network cable to run from the the Fibre converter to the router.

The problem:

My Samsung Flip 4 phone, likes to claim that it has no internet connection to the router, it will connect to the Wifi. I can use it for awhile and then eventually it will switch to the 5g connection and rely on it for the rest of the day. Restarting the router and restarting my phone tempoarily resolves the matter but it only takes a matter of minutes for my phone to once again claim it does not have internet connection via the Wifi.

Turning off Wifi Intelligence on the Samsung then results on it staying on the wifi claiming there is no internet. Using another other device's connection via Wifi is perfectly normal and there is no indication in poor signal or no internet from other devices. My Wife has exactly the same phone and her's works, or at least she's never noticed it.

Does anyone have any idea why a single wifi enabled device in my house has decided that my router isn't providing internet over the Wifi when all over devices are?

Re: Hub2 and Android Wifi Internet connectivity

@Taaketa I would start by trying to establish whether the phone is actually disconnecting from the wifi OR whether it is just failing to contact its server ( and therefore complaining 'no internet' )

I suggest you look at the Hub 2 technical log , if the phone is disconnecting from wifi, there will be entries in the log. There will likely be entries for other devices but you should be able to identify those for the phone by its MAC address.

Re: Hub2 and Android Wifi Internet connectivity

I believe I may have discovered the cause of the fault. I have amended two settings on my Samsung Flip 4. I changed the randomised mac address for this wifi only to Phone Mac so that it keeps the same MAC. I noted that the plusnet router had several DHCP assignments for my phone all using different MACs.

As well as having turned off "Switch to Mobile Data" under Intelligence Wi-fi. I have turned off "Switch to better Wi-fi networks." as checking my local area I noticed an open EE router (Although I don't think my phone ever connected to it). But I was concerned it maybe connecting so.

@MisterW I checked logs and it showed my phone repeatedly connecting and disconnecting to the network over and over again. Likely explaining the multiple MAC addressing.
