Hub 2 - need clarification on the hub's reported Data Usage

I have a Hub2. It's with FTTP but don't think that is important here.

I was just looking through the Hub settings   (ie Home - Advanced settings - Broadband ) and noticed what i thought was unexpectedly  high (at least to me!) upstream data usage compared to downstream :-

Data usage: 33.2 GB Uploaded / 146.7 GB Downloaded

Can anyone confirm that the 33.2GB does indeed relate to data going out to the outside world, and not to any data between my local networked devices?

Cheers

I would say those are the figures for the data to / from the WAN i.e. the public internet.

Got some live streaming CCTVs or a family member with a Torrent server or even cloud backups.

Re: Hub 2 - need clarification on the hub's reported Data Usage

Looking at my statistics, upload being 20% of download is where my Plusnet connection sits at the moment over a couple of weeks.

I would say the significant upstream traffic generator is working from home and (in particular) Microsoft Teams use.

Re: Hub 2 - need clarification on the hub's reported Data Usage

Due to my WAN connection being restarted last night (BT or Plusnet doing something), I can report only a slightly less than 24 hour period.

Up - 21.9MB

Down - 278.2MB

Another thing you might want to look at

Home -> My Devices or Home - > advanced -> My devices

You should see Up and Down values for each device.

A restart of a WAN link won't clear these. (Disconnecting and removing the device or rebooting the Hub2 will)

In my case some examples

VoIP phone - 403MB up, 305MN down

PC - 5.1GB up, 67.9GB down

(managed) switch - 0B up, 0B down (I've not connected to the switch over IP since the last reboot of the Hub2).

Therefore I have to conclude that the figures from Home - Advanced settings - Broadband is network traffic leaving and entering the home (i.e. no local LAN traffic).

Re: Hub 2 - need clarification on the hub's reported Data Usage

Thanks all for helping confirm all that data is from Hub to the outside world.

I'll check out what devices are responsible , and why, just in case it's affecting general wi-fi response times. What makes this more tricky is that some devices are used by two users, so it might be down to what they are individually doing/using.

I'm curious in case some 'apps', or OSs, are using my devices to distribute data around the country.

So that's all in this thread. Might need to open another thread if I discover anything interesting .

Cheers for now

Re: Hub 2 - need clarification on the hub's reported Data Usage

Unless you have any file sharing or similar software running I doubt you are being used as a source of traffic to others.

It’s possible that some virus or infection is generating traffic and it would be worth taking a look at computers using virus checking software ( I wouldn’t suspect phones) but I think what you are seeing is what is normal with the modern “cloud” world.

Yes I would check what Windows is doing (if you use it - it keeps wanting to back up my PC to the microsoft cloud for me.)  Also my iPhone wants to back up stuff to the cloud as well.

I generally try to turn these off as I am not sure I want anyone (esp. Microsoft) keeping my data "safe" for me online.
