Fritz!Box 7530 AX for FTTC

Just got a Fritz!Box 7530 AX from eBay (ex-Zen).
Failing to connect to my FTTC service.

Full factory reset.
Added [me]@plusdsl.net and my member centre password.
Set to:
Always-on
Use VLAN Unticked (I have heard of tag 101 but don't think that applies here)
VPI=0
VCI=38
PPPoA/VC-Mux

Access failed for 'unspecified reason'.

Am I missing something here?

TVM

Re: Fritz!Box 7530 AX for FTTC

You do need VLAN set to 101 for FTTC.

Fix

@markv those are ADSL settings , you need VDSL ones and as @jab1 says VLAN ID 101

Re: Fritz!Box 7530 AX for FTTC

... and use "PPPoE" instead of "PPPoA/VC-Mux"

Re: Fritz!Box 7530 AX for FTTC

Thanks to all who replied. The full solution was a combination!

Added [me]@plusdsl.net and my member centre password.
Always-on
Use VLAN ID 101
VPI=0
VCI=38
PPPoE

Very strange... I used PPPoA/VC MUX because that's how I have my Draytek Vigor 2866 configured (which has been connecting for years)!

Re: Fritz!Box 7530 AX for FTTC

@markv the 2866 (and I suspect the 7530 ) will auto detect whether the physical connection is ADSL or VDSL.

It will still display the default ADSL parameters, but they are not used when VDSL is detected.

However, for VDSL , what IS needed is the VLAN ID and so I suspect that adding this setting is actually what made the connection work.

Re: Fritz!Box 7530 AX for FTTC

As it's still the Zen Internet router I found their Help pages useful in setting up my 7530 on FTTP.

Re: Fritz!Box 7530 AX for FTTC

@markv  -  Well done on getting your 7530 AX working !

Now that you are at the start of your journey using your new router, before you go too far in configuring it for your ongoing requirements, have you checked that it is running the latest firmware ?

According to the Fritz!Box website, you should have version 8.02 (released 9th January 2025) -

- see here for the files - https://download.avm.de/fritzbox/fritzbox-7530-ax/other/fritz.os/

To update the Fritz!OS, there are various instructions here -

Ideally you should be able to get your router to be running the AVM firmware instead of the Zen branded version.

@outcast  You are way behind the times ...... AVM Fritzos 8.20 Firmware

Should be available for all models soon if not already.

This write up explains how to remove the Zen software and reset the router back to plain FritzOS

Yes I had seen that (a week ago), but currently it is only being rolled out for the 7590 - see press release

For @markv to update their 7530 AX as a configuration starting point today, then the version 8.02 is the correct version (as of 28 July 2025).

Of course upgrading to Fritz!OS 8.20 will soon be possible and desirable, but probably not advisable to pre-emptively install before it officially appears in the AVM/Fritz! support downloads section for the exact 7530 AX model.

Re: Fritz!Box 7530 AX for FTTC

@markv  after the update, it would be worth checking your router's bufferbloat grade, as some users have reported poor latency with the 7530 AX on their xDSL connections.

To test your router+FTTC combination, run the Waveform test, and hope that you get a bufferbloat grade of "A+", "A" or "B"

If not, users have posted solutions for the 7530 AX, that go along the lines of this -

The hardware-accelerated packet acceleration has been faulty for quite some time on pretty much all DSL and cable models from the past five years or so. The fix is to go to the support menu under fritz.box/support.lua Scroll down to packet acceleration. Keep it on, but uncheck hardware-accelerated packet acceleration and click the button to save the settings. I've had the exact same issue with the 7590 AX. The CPU load increases, yes, but the full bandwidth of a DSL connection (even 250 Mbit/s connections) is still available. The 7530 AX actually has a stronger CPU, so it shouldn't have any issues, but the buffer bloat goes to near-zero. Warning: You'll need to set the setting again after every update or other reboot, because the setting is not persistent and gets reset after a reboot.

Re: Fritz!Box 7530 AX for FTTC

@outcast  Many thanks for all that info. Who'd have known it...

Got a "B", whcih is good enough for me as I do no gaming and fairly light streaming 🙂

Re: Fritz!Box 7530 AX for FTTC

@markv

Yes, "B" is a perfectly adequate score (indicating that the worse case test ping response was > 30ms and < 60ms)

which is good enough for uninterrupted VoIP, video calling, and streaming - while simultaneously doing a cloud backup or other large data upload, without stressing your VDSL connection's bandwidth limitations.

It looks like your Fritz!Box is a nice upgrade from using the Plusnet Hub-2 😎
