Admin password not working...

New plusnet user today, so new router installed.

Everything's working as it should, but I want to change the router name and password.
I can get into the Hub Manager interface by using the Admin Password supplied, but when I change the password and click 'Save' I get an alert that the Admin Password is incorrect. (Of course, it isn't) but it's stopping me from going further.

Any ideas gratefully received and TIA!

Re: Admin password not working...

Sure that there are certain special characters that you cannot use. But cannot find the post.

Others will be along with better advice

When you say router name and password, do you mean the Admin name or the wireless SSID?

The router Admin name and password are they same as your account name and password. Ii you want to change the account name then I suspect that you need to ring in as I don't believe that you can do this yourself. If you want to change the account password then it's probably easier to simply start logging in to your Plusnet account and select 'forgotten password?'.

On the other hand, if it's just the wireless SSID and password that you want to change then from memory, I no longer use a Hub 2, you need to do this in the Advanced wireless settings. Don't forget to save the changes.

"The router Admin name and password are they same as your account name and password."

Surely not? For the Hub 2 router there is no Admin name as such, simply the Admin password. This is on the sticker supplied with the router, also on the slide out plastic tab at the rear of the router.

"Admin password for Hub Manager (view at 192.168.1.254):" <password>

The default password shown with my Hub 2 included only alphanumeric characters. I have easily changed it - remembering to SAVE - and it now includes additional, common, non alphanumeric characters.

It is entirely independent of the Plusnet account name and password.

Separately, I also easily changed the Router's broadcast Wi-Fi name - using only normal alphanumeric characters.

As to the problem changing the Admin password? I too can only suggest that non acceptable characters may be being used - though I can't immediately suggest what they could be! Here is what it says on the Hub 2's password change page:

"You'll be asked to enter this password before you can access the set-up options in your Plusnet Hub Manager.

Your password is case sensitive and must be 5-20 characters long.
You should include a combination of letters and numbers, spaces are not allowed.
Your new password should not be anything that someone else can easily guess."

Re: Admin password not working...

@pvmb

When Plusnet connect to the router they identify the router by the account username (in the form [email protected]) and password. This is automatically entered into the router by the Plusnet configuration platform, which is cross referenced to the router serial number when the router is first switched on or after a factory reset. True it is not needed to log into the router.

There is no suggestion that the Admin and Wireless credentials are anything but totally independent.

However the two do get mixed up, as I suspect is the case here. The 'router name and password' implies to me the account credentials, my suspicion is that @RichBungay wishes to change the wireless settings.

This sort of confusion is due to both Plusnet and user misnaming. For example, Plusnet calling FTTC 'Fibre', referring to Full Fibre as 'broadband' and now an increasing number referring to their Internet data connection, be it FTTC or Full fibre, as 'My WiFi'. The list could go on. Little wonder confusion is rife.

Re: Admin password not working...

@Baldrick1

OK. I took the OP as meaning they wanted to change the Hub Manager Admin password and the router's Wi-Fi broadcast name.

What about "landline" which now seems to mean at least five different things? ☹️

Not to mention BT(!) calling a GPON connection "Full Fibre Broadband"! 😮

Re: Admin password not working...

The lack of precision in the phrasing of questions leads to a lot of confusion and wasted effort.  A router has three passwords…

  1. The admin login password requested when accessing https://192.168.1.254
  2. The router’s WiFi SSID pass phrase
  3. The connection password which is the same as the account password used on the user portal

The original question is unclear but a guess at (2) would seem likely: changing the WiFi SSID and password on a new router to match those of that replaced avoids the necessary of reconnecting every device in the household.
