Re: Telecare device

I  have had a third party voip service with an fttp connection from Plusnet  for over 5 years now

So I would have probably done what you have done

So if Plusnet have reason (the marker being one) to suspect a telecare device (of any type) is present , then they simply refer the customer to BT

How does the marker get set for 'a telecare device (of any type) ' ?

If the device is 2G/4G then neither PlusNet nor BT-OR can ever know.  The marker has to result from a 'Telecare over PSTN' being installed at some point, and the marker was then not been cleared off when it was updated to 2G/4G.

Sadly one suspects BT just see this as a way of revenue generation.

@mwwagain

They get to know by asking and instructing the installers to look for one (or maybe also ask?)

I can understand people thinking this, but I believe that it's much more related to protecting the BT brand by not relying on what they are told by their customers, who may or may not fully understand the question.

It may well be blindingly obvious to those engaging in this topic but there are vulnerable frail people out there to whom the closure of the PSTN and it's implications are a total unwelcome mystery, of which they have no capability or interest in understanding.

Yes. See those headlines now (I have already seen somesuch): "BT left my disabled, elderly granny cut off without help!"

But: let's not spoil a good conspiracy theory, huh? 😏

Exactly this.

Re: Telecare device

Vulnerable customers are a major problem to the PSTN closure. This is from an ISPReview article

"Openreach has also sped up the upgrade process, while aiming to keeping vulnerable customers safe, with the introduction of its Prove Telecare service – where specially trained engineers visit homes to test telecare devices and make sure they work on a new digital line before customers are upgraded. “To date, we’ve safely upgraded more than 70,000 customers with telecare devices,” said Openreach today."
