Refund With No Payment Details

When I moved to another provider I cancelled my direct debit. Please don't tell me I should have left it open etc as I've been shafted before and payments taken when they shouldn't have and have had to wait up to 6 weeks to get them back. I cancel them all when I move on from anywhere.
I'm now £20 in credit with Plusnet. I've read I should get it back as a cheque. Is it usual to automatically have a cheque sent out, or do I have to phone up to get the refund started?
Any help is appreciated.

@Oldgrey97 As your DD is cancelled, the cheque route is the only one available to Plusnet, but please be aware that it could take a while before you see it - from experience, this could be any time up to six weeks.
The process is automatic - but slow.
