No more Domain Renewals !! (from Feb 2025...)

Hello!

I have literally just registered on the plusnet forum just to make this post.

Back in the late 1990s I was given a CD i think outside Liverpool St Station in London by someone working for freenetname and gladly created my own website.

Over the years it has hosted many family photos and documents.

And in the years since I understand madasafish and then plusnet have taken over the customers and websites.

I've never contacted plusnet before so I have no idea what I'm doing, but I did find the 'No more Domain Renewals !!' thread doing a Google search and it seemed very similar to my issue with someone noticing their domain had not been renewed and someone really helpful called @plusnettony replied 'Your domain is set to auto-renew, which will mean it is done for you, but there is a little time left before it expires. I'll have a word with the guys that renew for you anyway.'

So ... and sorry if you guys are bored with requests like these, please can someone confirm if johnnice.co.uk is being auto-renewed anymore - i've just let someone deal with this for over 20 years! And if not please explain whats changed, what I should be doing every year(?) and finally please can it being also manually renewed?

I know these legacy accounts are probably a PITA, but there are real families using them and we just need a little help and guidance.

Thanks @plusnettony whoever you are (probably one guy in an IT backroom keeping the whole company afloat?)

Whether or not your domain will renew when due, you might be wanting to think about transfering it (and the email assuming that's what you use it for) as it won't be Plusnet for long.

There are many options but I've seen positive mentions for Mythic Beasts as an email, domain and hosting provider.

johnnice.co.uk is still live and is due to be renewed imminently (by me). 

As you've seen in the forums, we're making some changes to email. Over the next month or so, you'll get personalised communication about the changes. Essentially, you'll have the option to continue to use the domain but you'll pay for Email, web space and renewal to a company called Greenby. The other option is to transfer the domain out but there really is no need for that.

Hi Tony - thanks so much for replying, do really appreciate - I am sure you are busy.

And thanks for renewing my domain - but it raises the obvious question - if I hadn't reached out would this have happened automatically? If so then I would have been happy to assume this would continue in perpetuity.

But now you've mentioned Greenby this is a whole new topic for me to understand. Will looking for the email you suggested.

However you do say I don't need to transfer - in which case am I naive to just assume this gets renewed forever?

The domain is due to renew next month, 7th September, so I'd have renewed anyway. This would continue until we did something different. As it happens, that something different will happen later this year. 

For now, things remain the same, later, perhaps next month, you'll get communication about changes. At that point, if you choose to, we'll transfer your email/webspace and domain to a third party. Payment will resume (details in the email). Or, we can arrange a transfer of your domain and close the email down on our side, whichever is best for you. 

When the domain is transferred (whether it be to Greenby or somewhere else of your choice), you'll start to pay for renewal of the domain again should you keep it.

Ok that's clearer.

Without wishing to discuss the vulgar subject of money(!) - the premise of freenetname was a free domain, which many people took up and are still using.

That was contractual effectively in their terms, and it seemed that obligation transferred to madasafish and then plusnet.

This is evidenced by the fact that no charges have been raised for 26 years!

it seems reasonable to expect this to continue with a further transfer to Greenby who would also need to respect the terms?

I hope somebody clever is looking into this as part of whatever negotiations are happening between Plusnet & Greenby...

You paid for the account though, which included dial up, mail, etc.
