Landline Termination

I still have a landline and I wondered if it is known when I am likely to lose this.
Has PN announced when they will look to terminate these?

Re: Landline Termination

@bazzer

I believe PN are activley looking to move people from the product that's used to provide the landline.

I wouldn't wait until you get notification. Look into your options now and be ready to move when PN contact you. They'll try and move you to EE for a combined internet / VOIP service.

Re: Landline Termination

Openreach are currently set to pull the plug on analogue landlines by 31-JAN-2027 at the latest.

The cost of a landline increases later in this year as an incentive to customers & ISPs to move on to Digital Voice or VoIP or to terminate the landlines and let the little used numbers go out of service.

Decide if you want to keep the number and if so what kind of service you prefer.

I would not leave this to the last moment, the level of panic near to the end of this year may be very significant.

Re: Landline Termination

Thanks for the replies.

In order to keep my landline number, do I need to move to FTTP, or can I stay on the type of connection I have now (I think it's DSL)?

Re: Landline Termination

@bazzer

VOIP works on any internet connection.

If Full Fibre is available then it's worth considering. Check the following to see. You're looking for WBC FTTP in the left hand column. If it's available what does it say below the results window for Fibre Priosity Exchange (Y / N)?

Re: Landline Termination

@bmc Did you include a link? It does not show.

However, I can upgrade to FTTP and I will now look at the options.

Re: Landline Termination

@bazzer

My apologies - I forgot.

If your Exchange is a Fibre Priority Exchange then you have no choice but Full Fibre if it's available otherwise it's a product called SOGEA (FTTC without the phone).

You have two choices - stay with PN and arrange a VOIP provider to take over the phone (30 days from when you change internet) or move to an ISP who does both.

I suspect it matters not whether its a Fibre priority exchange or not. If Full fibre is available, most ISPs are going to be reluctant to accept an order for anything else!

Re: Landline Termination

@MisterW  That may well be the case, My sister is also with Plusnet currently on FTTC SOGEA  and her contract was coming to an end and when she looked at the upgrade / deals in the members section she was only offered FTTP no FTTC at all so she went with a FTTP option and awaiting duct laying to be done, I guess if she called she may have been offered a FTTC SOGEA deal, but Plusnet don't seem to be offering them any other way at least for current members.

The answer to supplemetary posts will be found in the narrative below the table. It would help understanding if you could post that for us.

Re: Landline Termination

@bazzer

Thanks for the information.

The results show both SOGEA and Full Fibre are available though ISP's don't seem keen to offer SOGEA when FTTP is available.

So you have a choice - stay with PN and get a VOIP service elsewhere or move to an ISP who does both.

Staying with PN means a bit more work short term but you then have separation of internet and phone so have more choices in the future. Note that there will be a few days downtime on the phone if you stay with PN as you CAN'T iniatiate the number port until you've changed product and have lost the phone service.

Full Fibre offers a better service in terms of reliability. VOIP doesn't work in power cuts unless you have power back up. FF is also better in this case (no batteries at the Cabinet to run out).

Re: Landline Termination

@bmc Thanks, Brian.

That is very helpful.

Coincidentally, or not, I have received an email from PN today telling me about the changes to my service.

Ideally, I'd like to stay with PN for both services, I wonder why they don't offer VoIP given their connection to BT.

However, as they don't, I may separate the two.

EE is the option they are pushing, but I don't know how reliable or competent EE customer service is.

Re: Landline Termination

@bazzer

PlusNet are being set up as the basic value brand of the BT Group - no added services.

Depending on how long you have left on your contract think abut Zen Internet for both - well regarded ISP who supply a highly regarded router. Not the cheapest mind you.

Depending on your phone usage A&A are worth a look for VOIP

Is PN email an issue if you move?
