Installation fee for moving from Plusnet to EE?

I'm part of the Plusnet moving to EE brigade. 

Our contract with Plusnet ended on 1 Sept and having not received any info from Plusnet re our switchover to EE beforehand this date I called them and they ended up transferring me to EE to get set up early.  All seems to be set up for switchover tomorrow, however I never raised it during the call (as it was long and I needed to get to a meeting) but we are being charged a £30 installation/set-up fee to join EE when it wasn't our choice to move and wondered if this should be covered by Plusnet or EE?  I keep getting texts from EE to say they will pay any fees to leave contract early but this doesn't apply to us.  The set up fee requires us plugging in a new router - no engineer visit.  Anyone else had this?

This sounds like you initiated your own ‘one-touch-switch’ move to EE (for a switch tomorrow), rather than PlusNet informing you that you were being forcibly moved by PlusNet to EE while maintaining your existing PlusNet T&Cs.

At this point, only you and EE know what terms and conditions you agreed to with EE.

If you somehow were to be able to contact EE and amend or cancel your new arrangements, you’d have to do that through EE. It sounds like you’re also receiving marketing texts from EE (talking about paying early leaver fees) at the same time as whatever arrangements you have for your new EE contract which begins tomorrow, so be careful with exactly what EE is contractually telling you.

You will, by now, have new EE router & kit, so in the event that somehow you don’t commence a new contract tomorrow and are able to return to PlusNet (on out-of-contract rates), you’ll have to return that equipment to EE. But this is extremely late, and you’ll have to contact EE formally and make sure they are looking at and discussing your new contract.

Please post an update after you have talked to EE about your new contract.

Thanks for your reply - I only contacted Plusnet as knew we’d be out of contract and worried what our monthly bill would be by waiting for the move.
It’s likely too late to do anything now so will just suck up the additional fee and put it down to experience unless the switch over to tomorrow doesn’t go smoothly

Obviously too late for you now, and I can understand how this happened, but I believe I am right in saying the best thing to have done in the circumstances was simply to re-contract with Plusnet - despite knowing you were shortly due to leave them. Thus avoiding any high out of contract costs and leaving Plusnet to then transfer you to EE on the same contract terms and with no extra costs.

This might benefit others in a similar position. If I am wrong about this I'm sure somebody will be along soon to correct me.

Yes, unfortunately the OP has - in effect - brought this £30 charge on themselves by doing things in the wrong order.

It is not all bad news though, as they were already out of contract so had they waited for Plusnet to initiate the automatic migration to EE, a month of being out of contract plus the time it takes for EE to put the order through would, no doubt, have cost more than £30 in Plusnet out-of-contract costs.

I was quoted £49 charges for being out of contract so wanted to get it sorted. If I knew that I could have claimed for leaving a contract early I would have just renewed and then claimed charges back from Ee but wasn’t aware if that at the time.

I think the £30 is a relatively new "Broadband Activation Fee"

I assume you wanted to keep a "landline" service and thus had to leave Plusnet.

I suspect Plusnet would not have moved you to EE (once the minimum term had completed) as there was no contractual liability to continue the "landline".

Hopefully the EE service will be good.

@markhawkin I'm out of contract at the end of September and they are moving me.

It looks like the phone element is being prioritised whether you are in contract or not.
