Helllo
I am due to renew my broadband contract next month but am in rented accommodation and may have to leave during the next 12 months. I need to know what the termination charges could be if I cancelled early as I won’t be taking the broadband with me. If say I leave and cancel after 6 months and am paying 29.50 pm what are the termination charges on a 12 month contract please? I need to weigh up this against carrying on with the out of contract price of 40.00 pm which I can cancel at short notice without exit fees.
Thanks for any help.

@Wizzard The ETCs can only really be obtained at he point of termination by calling the Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632 but a rough figure can be 'guessed' at by multiplying your monthly charge by the number of months remaining on the contract. The final actual figure is slightly lower than this, as PN will make some adjustments based on savings they make by not providing the service, but those adjustments are not publicly available.

So based on your reply I would be much better off allowing my existing contract to expire and just carry on out of contract as the early termination fees would otherwise be so much greater than any savings made by renewing the contract for another 12 months. The only thing is that the early termination section on the website gives an example of someone paying 19.99 pm after deduction of vat and the wholesale savings made by Plusnet of 12.00 pm giving a monthly amount 7.99 pm which brings down the monthly exit charge dramatically but I don’t know if that example is accurate or not. If the wholesale costs saving was more transparent by having a fixed equation to work it out with then customers could see what they are in for. Seems unnecessarily complicated to me.

As said, your true ETCs can only be determined by COTS at the point of request - the example given will, by its very nature as an example may be totally misleading, and I doubt it is accurate, given that no commercial organisation will reveal commercially sensitive information.
If you don't know when (or if) you will need to move during a 12 month contract, what you decide is entirely up to you.

You need a scenario model…
- what would be the monthly charge on a new contract
- how long into that contract do you think you’ll need to exit early
- what would be the ETC for that exit point
- what is the additional charge for out of contract price to the anticipated exit date
Calculation to be made …
- ETC penalty: fixed term residual months x ETC monthly charge
- Out of contract excess charges: (Out of contract charge - In contract charge) x months to early exit
If 1 < 2 then get a new contract. ETCs can only be discussed with COTs
Contact Customer Options Team (aka COTS)
COTs is the place to go to if you want to find out anything to do with your contract in respect of leaving, renewing or simply enquiring about early termination charges (ETCs). They have their own number and tend to answer quicker than the general customer service number.
Call this number 0800 432 0080 and press 2 and it takes you straight to a Sales/COT advisor. You get two simple options of 'are you an existing member' or 'are you new'.
