IPv6 - which DNS servers are available ?

The idea for this thread is create a list of usable IPv6 DNS servers, and for any comments on their usage.

Google
2001:4860:4860::8888
2001:4860:4860::8844

Hurricane Electric / Tunnel Broker - DNS believed to be open for anyone to use.
2001:470:20::2

SixXS - DNS only available to customers within their address space.

OpenDNS - Does not YET provide custom filtering but does include malware, botnet and phishing protection.
2620:0:ccc::2
2620:0:ccd::2
This OpenDNS forum thread - OpenDNS Community - IPv6 Web Filtering suggests using -
::ffff:d043:dede
::ffff:d043:dcdc
::ffff:d043:dedc
::ffff:d043:dcde
or the following for additional filtering using their "FamilyShield" -
::ffff:d043:de7b
::ffff:d043:dc7b

Plusnet
Any ideas ?

I will try any maintain this list at the top of the thread, so please feel free to add new suggestions or corrections.

Re: IPv6 - which DNS servers are available ?

Very useful post Purleigh.
Might be worth adding a link to the SixXS resolver info for completeness.

Re: IPv6 - which DNS servers are available ?

My router (Fritz!Box 7390) will not accept any DNS server address starting with a semicolon so currently unable to use the OpenDNS family filter.

Did you mean semicolon ( ; ) or colon ( : )? You need to use the later.

Re: IPv6 - which DNS servers are available ?

Ooops, meant colon, not semicolon.
The actual message was "The IPv6 address is not correct. An IPv6 address may not start with a double colon." so, sorry fo the confusion but it does appear that the advised OpenDNS family Filter addresses are not correct (or my router cannot handle them for some reason).

Re: IPv6 - which DNS servers are available ?

Try them without the concatenation of leading zeros e.g. 0:0:0:0:0:ffff:d043:dede (or just 0::fff:d043:dede might work).
Do note however that these addresses are IPv4-mapped IPv6 addresses and thus they cannot actually be reached over IPv6. You may as well therefore use the IPv4 addresses for OpenDNS's resolvers if you want full functionality without unnecessary confusion.

Re: IPv6 - which DNS servers are available ?

Thanks MJN, removing the concatenation seems to work (at least the router accepts it).

Our DNS platform has yet to be upgraded to IPv6 so you will be assigned Hurricane Electric's DNS servers when you connect.

Re: IPv6 - which DNS servers are available ?

guys ipv4 servers can still return ipv6 addresses so it shouldnt be an issue if a router doesnt accept ipv6 dns servers.
eg. see this output (I queried a ipv4 dns server).
# host google.co.uk
google.co.uk has address 173.194.35.152
google.co.uk has address 173.194.35.159
google.co.uk has address 173.194.35.151
google.co.uk has IPv6 address 2a00:1450:4016:800::1017
google.co.uk mail is handled by 20 alt1.aspmx.l.google.com.
google.co.uk mail is handled by 30 alt2.aspmx.l.google.com.
google.co.uk mail is handled by 40 alt3.aspmx.l.google.com.
google.co.uk mail is handled by 50 alt4.aspmx.l.google.com.

Re: IPv6 - which DNS servers are available ?

That is true, however on an IPv6 trial we ought to be trying to maximise the use of IPv6 transport wherever possible - including DNS queries. It is a shame the likes of OpenDNS don't fully support IPv6 yet (with full feature parity against IPv4) and indeed somewhat surprising given they are trying to position themselves as a core enable to safe Internet access.... but the reality is only if you're accessing via the 'old' Internet protocol...  Sad
Besides which, and perhaps more importantly to many, if you want full marks on the v6 test sites you'll need to be using a DNS server that can talk IPv6!

Re: IPv6 - which DNS servers are available ?

true but consider this, not everyone will have a router capable of ipv6 input for dns servers, so you are still testing that scenario for plusnet, so its still useful.
In affect the dns server I queried is actually a ipv6 dns server but I queried it on its ipv4 interface, if that makes sense.

Re: IPv6 - which DNS servers are available ?

It does make sense. And it's a good point - things can get quite confusing when discussing IPv6 and DNS as it is all too easy to end up talking about different things despite using the same language!
