Hello,
Yes there are wires in there...
the back of the faceplate has a connection for inserts with 3 points labelled:
5
3
2
How do I know which wires go where?
Thanks.

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm should help you - note you will only be connecting two wires (not the bell aerial wire).
You do need to check the colours used by looking inside the extension sockets.
If your router can live beside the master socket I'd recommend you consider a filtered master face plate. This gets away from having the filter dangling out of the master as it has a phone and a ADSL socket on the front. In addition the connections on the back for extension sockets are connected to the phone side of the filter so you won't need filters in any extensions you use (except in unusual cases where double filtering of some DECT phones seems necessary).
