Re: Which dect phones work better with VOIP

When I set up the cordless phone that comes with the BT Digital Voice solution the instructions were simple and it worked first time.

I don't think it's a WiFi phone (more likely DECT) but however it works, it did!

The current EE 'walkabout' home phones are the same - wifi devices - the ones they hand out when the green BT socket on their router does not work and why they tell afflicted users that their year-old DECT system is 'incompatible and obsolete'.

So they are using some kind of Wi-Fi, or part Wi-Fi, calling system? Sounds to me very like... using a mobile phone at home via Wi-Fi calling. 😁

What a load of malarkey! I do hope people going through all this just to keep a pseudo-landline phone going at home think it's worth it. The more I read here the more relieved I am that I decided not to bother.

Re: Which dect phones work better with VOIP

Let me put it this way. The BT router is connecting to the remote unit and the phone works fine. The WiFi on the BT router is switched off. The mesh WiFi uses a different SSID.

My money is on the WPS button being dual purpose and the router to remote unit using DECT.

@Baldrick1  According to the following link, the BT Digital Voice remote unit and the BT supplied DV telephones are all DECT devices and other DECT handsets can be paired with the DECT functionality of the BT Hub so no mysterious wi-fi telephone connectivity going on.

No malarkey, simply a discussion re how it works. If you’re happy with just a mobile then that’s your choice. Others prefer a landline, be the ‘line’ optical rather than copper.

Another reason why it would be DECT rather than 2.4GHz WiFi is the range of DECT over 2.4GHz WiFi

Re: Which dect phones work better with VOIP

The thing I like (at least in theory) about the BT (and other ISP provided) system(s) is that it all remains inside their network.

It doesn't need to break out into the wider internet and thus suitable priority can be applied to their VoIP service between the user and the central "exchange".

It feels more reliable than any third party solution.

Having said that, my third party solution has only lost connection with the provider once (for a few minutes) in two years so a good few 9's in the availability.
