Voicemail/caller id issues

Have bought a new landline phone and answermachine. Wanted to turn voicemail off my account as I end up missing messages and want them to go to answerphone instead. Managed to turn remove it from my account but now my account says it has an error on it.
I am also having problems with caller id. It says it is on my account but doesn't seem to be working. I have tried *#234# and this says it is unavailable. I was going to try removing it from my account and then readding it, as it appears people have had success with this, however now can't as I can't access my account due to above error.
I have tried my phone on someone elses landline and caller id works fine there so it is not a phone problem
Can anyone help me, without my have to call customer services?
