Looking at my bill I note that this call is charged per minute on plus net plus a connection fee.
Can you please explain why there is a 60% premium on this charge with Plusnet.

If you have a Plusnet landline then BT's prices don't apply to you. As Oldjim says, please post the number and the chargeband can be confirmed.

There should be some kind of search engine where you put in the number and it tells you the call cost breakdown (http://aaisp.net.uk/telecoms-prices.html - maybe not the best example as that premium number does not show up in the search engine).

That is a 09065005000 Premium Rate Service - p0 tariff taken from http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,115999.0.html which is charged at from here http://www.plus.net/home-broadband/tariffs/
Quote from: AndyH http://gadgetshow.channel5.com/gadget-show/gadget-news/the-gadget-show-competition-23122013
Possibly: Call 0906 500 5000
Premium Rate Service - p0 Setup Fee 13.87 Plus 153.18p per minute
On BT from http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumer/assets/downloads/BT_PhoneTariff_SpecialNos.pdf it is 153.179p per minute but doesn't seem to include a setup charge
So in practical terms not a great deal of difference

I thought they were all charged per minute, and the spend cap was implemented via limiting the length of the phone call.
So was the Gadet Show call longer than it should have been?

It would be impossible for the call to cost £2, even with BT, if the minute rate is 153.179p and the call lasts 2 mins.

It says on page 3 that a call setup charge of 15p applies to 09xx ( excluding fixed fee ones ). So it's basically the same as PN.

Quite often you see on TV it will say "Costs no more than XX from a BT Landline" - so are they saying the call charge will be capped irrespective of the call length? Or are they assuming the call length?

I assumed the costs were limited (so they'll say 'will cost no more than £x on a BT landline'), as it'll be charged a y per minute rate and after z duration you'll be cut off anyway.
Also, I assume they mention BT as other landline providers would mark up the wholesale pence per minute rates.
And you'll get the people who wonder why they've had to re-mortgage their house having used a mobile, when it should only have cost a couple of quid. I see they do the old 'calls from mobiles'
