I am a little concerned about this engineer - Plusnet no longer issue static IP's. Can you get as much detail from him as possible, please?
Perhaps he meant you need to have a static Plusnet IP to avoid having the problem? 🙂

IP address allocation is only done at account level when there’s a “static” IP address.
Not sure I specifically mentioned a static IP address, I was speaking in general terms that the mechanism for a Dynamic or Static IP address was determined at account level. I'm leave this thread now.

OK. This is a reply to all but not sure how to tag everyone who has been helpful. The Engineer has been and was definitely from Openreach. He said himself and another of his colleagues had attended at least a dozen call outs in this area for the same problem this week. He said they had found in all cases, that there was nothing wrong with Openreaches network and the problem was definitely with Plusnet. He said his colleague had told him the only thing that fixes it, is to issue a static IP address.
He did some tests on the Router, ONT, outside where the cable comes in, and did something at the bottom of the road (I'm not sure what he actually checked). He said everything was fine with the network. He then connected to the network himself and was finding the same problems that I was having. He said the previous customers He had seen all had the same problems, to varying degrees. He then rang Plusnet Technical.
Plusnet Technical ARE FULLY AWARE of this problem. They have been getting swathes of customers calling in from certain areas of the country, currently, Northamptonshire, Wiltshire and Cornwall, with the same problem. Plusnet also, do not know what is causing the problem, but, the only way to fix it at the moment, is to issue a Static IP Address, which he did immediately. The router rebooted and hey presto, everything is working perfectly. It HAS to be done through Plusnet Technical and there's no charge for it, Customer Services will refuse to do it. Plusnet Technical are currently collating all the incidents of this for investigation.
The Engineer stayed for a while to observe things working, did a few more tests, then left.
Hope this helps and thank you.
Ian

@ijb59 Interesting, but as no details of the 'problem' seem to be publicly available, I shall leave further comment to those who may know a bit more. Must say I am intrigued though.

The Engineer and the Plusnet Technical person both said that all the customers were experiencing intermittent low speeds and total drop outs, difficulty in normal devices connecting, devices continuously connecting, dropping and reconnecting, while Openreaches network and Plusnets routers were showing normal operating states. The Plusnet Technician said, over the last week, they have had hundreds of calls and are collating the results for further investigation.

Thanks, Ian. it will be interesting to see if the conclusions of that investigation are made public, but I doubt that will happen.

Agreed. I doubt it too. I'm kind of amazed that they didn't actually acknowledge the problem when I first reported it, last Friday, but instead let me go through all the hoops and be without a useable service for a week. Oh well. Thanks for your help anyway.

No problem - I enjoy a challenge occasionally. Unfortunately, your experience is not unique, as they all work to scripts, unless you are lucky enough to get one of the rapidly diminishing old-timers.

Hi Dan,

I'm not so sure an Openreach engineer would be involved in IP Addressing as that is account based
Maybe my comment was a little clumsy?
The allocation of a specific IP address is linked to the account if there is a static IP address, otherwise (which is the general case) the IP address allocated is the next one available from the local BT IP address pool.

This sounds very much like the problem been seen before. If it is the same, be assured that the issue IS entirely with the BT Wholesale's network. It being mitigated by the application of a specific IP address from PLUSNET's pool does not negated that fact that the issue is with BT's local dynamic IP addresses.
I will escalate this claim.
EDIT: Done - the issue which I wonder is the same as this related to Edinburgh and Chesterfield last June.
