Speeds Still Dropping When Downloading

Hi

New to Plusnet

But after a few months, download speeds are still dropping way below the minimum.

I have screen shots of the speed drops. And It it not getting any better...

I am using an ASUS DSL-AX82U on Windows 10... It was still happening on the router sent to me Tinternet 4.jpgTRinternet Again 3.jpg

Didn't have this problem with my previous provider

Re: Speeds Still Dropping When Downloading

@pvmb Despite this topic being on the Full Fibre board, I suspect it is VDSL.

@purplecat123 That sounds strange. WHEN  the images get released, maybe we can advise. Until then, we can't. You could always ring Support, but I doubt you would get a useful answer.

Re: Speeds Still Dropping When Downloading

Right, images released. I am assuming these are game/program downloads, in which case, the speeds are dependent also on the servers said downloads are coming from.

Can you please attach a copy of the result from https://www.speedtest.net/ . Use the 'paper clip' bottom left of the reply window, rather than embedding the result.

Re: Speeds Still Dropping When Downloading

Its coming back, with 1.1gb

But it has nothing to do with steams servers. I've tried changing locations and so but the speed drops still happen

This has never happened on any previous provider, it even happens when using GOG (good old games) thats why I changed, for the increased speed and supposed reliable service

But the speeds are dropping below minimum as you can see

Must be a line problem maybe an account problem?

Re: Speeds Still Dropping When Downloading

If the Ookla test is coming back with your quoted speed, then I am sorry, but it is not a line or account problem, it is as I said a sending server issue.

I do very little large file downloading, only have a 100Mb connection, but do see a 'slow download' on the few occasions I down a 'big' download. FYI, I am not on a PN connection.

Re: Speeds Still Dropping When Downloading

It could be steam client as quick search comes up with Limit bandwidth and Throttle downloads while streaming settings.

Have these by any chance been set on by a steam client upgrade?

Re: Speeds Still Dropping When Downloading

Its not just the units is it? One of those steam pictures say peak of 79.7 MB/s which is 637.6 Mb/s which doesn’t sound too bad for a 900 Mb/s service.

Re: Speeds Still Dropping When Downloading

There is a bit more to this than might be obvious at first glance.

The most obvious question is where Steam's servers are and given the round trip time, how fast they can send the data (noting the difference between Bytes of data and bits (per second) in the service speed).

The second factor is what Steam does with the data once downloaded (perhaps decompresses it or installs it) so how fast can the PC take and deal with the data from Steam.

I'm surprised that Speedtest.net says 1.1Gb/s with a router with Gigabit Ethernet connections. I would have expected a limit of perhaps 950Mb/s (even allowing for the Plusnet service to be over provisioned for 900Mb/s).

That sounds more like fast.com (perhaps more correctly called flattery.com )

I am the satisfied customer....
