When I eventually contacted support we got the password reset and mentioned the fact that I should be using @plusdsl.net at the end of the username. 

I suspect not many of the support staff are aware that some legacy accounts use different realms

The connections settings link does work.

@Dan_the_Van Even I wasn't aware that of that. But then again my realm has always been @plusdsl.net so I've never had the need to go looking...

Support told me to use @plusdsl.net and it states it here https://www.plus.net/help/broadband/broadband-connection-settings/ for fiber broadband.

I lost a few hours down a rabbit hole due to this.
