How do I know when change from FTTC to FTTP is complete?

I have just been upgraded to FTTP, but my old copper phone cable from the BT pole is still in place and has been joined by a fibre cable.  I intend to keep my old phone number and use a voip service from A&A or Voipfone, but I understand that I must not attempt to contract this service until the migration is complete and the phone number is in limbo or I may inadvertently terminate my new  broadband service.

My question is, how do I know when the migration is complete?  My broadband service is working on the new fibre connection, and my old phone service provided on the copper BT cable is still working 2 days after the fibre installation - there is still a dial tone, and I can successfully dial my number from my mobile!

Can I contract for my voip service now, or do I need to wait until the old phone service stops working??|

That sounds surprising, mine ended the same afternoon the ONT was commissioned - perhaps they have forgotten you?

I'd suggest it is complete when you can no longer dial your landline phone. Or when 17070 indicates a different number on your landline to yours. My phone line continued 'working' electrically for about a month after that.

Re: How do I know when change from FTTC to FTTP is complete?

Thanks @pvmb for your very speedy reply.  I didn't know about the 17070 test service and I have just tried it - still my old number!

I did wonder if part of the problem is that the fibre installation was done in 2 separate visits. The ONT and fibe connection to the external junction box was installed last Friday, and the new cable from the pole to the junction box was installed this Monday (by a different engineer).

I'd be interested to know how you got on with this as I am about to have the very same situation.

One point with my setup is the phone service is directly from BT with FTTC provided by Plusnet - this was back from the days where Plusnet would provide  service on a line where they did not provide the voice service.

Re: How do I know when change from FTTC to FTTP is complete?

I'm still waiting to find out whether my transition to FTTP is complete!  The fibre installation took place on 2 days, Friday 19/6 (internal) and Monday 22/6 (external fibre cable).  The broadband fibre connection worked from the afternoon of Monday 22/6, and the landline phone service on the old copper cable is still working.  I logged a call with Plusnet reporting this situation, and I apparently need a visit from Openreach to complete the order!? I have no idea why this is necessary - surely they can test the fibre connection remotely to confirm that it is operational. This visit is scheduled for next Friday 24/7, but has already been postponed once from 15/7.

As my phone number is still working, I can only assume that the number has not yet been suspended and that I will still have 30 days to reclaim it when that happens.

I will post an update when (if?) this odyssey is finally complete.

Interesting that it should be so involved just to close the work out.

Out of interest was your phone service also with Plusnet?

@davec13 Is the router plugged into the phone master socket or the ONT?

Phone service is from Plusnet and router is plugged into ONT.

Something seems wrong tthere, @davec13 - if the router is plugged into the ONT  and working, the master socket and associated services should be disabled - you cannot have both working together.

Re: How do I know when change from FTTC to FTTP is complete?

Apparently you can!  The phone is plugged into the BT master socket - there is no connection to the VDSL data socket.  The Hub 2 router is plugged into the ONT.  Both phone and router are working.

That sounds a little strange, to put it mildly.

@Dan_the_Van  / @Townman  / @MisterW  - any comments? 😕

@jab1

"That sounds a little strange, to put it mildly."

As I said previously, he has been overlooked - someone has forgotten to do something? Assuming the landline IS still on the original phone number.

In my case the phone line continued 'working' for about a month after FF commissioned, but on a dummy, non account related exchange number. So no dial in and no dial out to chargeable numbers. Then it went completely dead.

@jab1

if the router is plugged into the ONT  and working, the master socket and associated services should be disabled - you cannot have both working together.

The operative word there being 'should' . It looks like the WLR service hasn't been ceased. The completion of the FTTP order should automatically trigger the cease order on the WLR.

However, this

I logged a call with Plusnet reporting this situation, and I apparently need a visit from Openreach to complete the order!? I have no idea why this is necessary - surely they can test the fibre connection remotely to confirm that it is operational. This visit is scheduled for next Friday 24/7, but has already been postponed once from 15/7.

probably means that the FTTP order hasn't formally completed for some reason (even though its working!) and so not triggered the WLR cease.

Re: How do I know when change from FTTC to FTTP is complete?

Just to confirm, the landline is still working correctly and we can make and receive calls. The line test call referred to earlier in this thread returns the correct number..
