Full Fibre 900 not getting advertised speed (PlusNet router)

Hi,

So got switched on today.  First time FTTP user.  When the router was switched on speed tests using WiFi was around 600ish MbIt.  Wired connection similar tad more.  Explained this to Engineer when still present and said might need to leave it 24 hours to settle down! Right this isn't ADSL so should just connect.

Anyways I tried my DrayTek router and WiFi reached 740 and wired connection 900.

This post if just an FYI for anyone else who experiences similar issues.  I don't suppose there is any settings on the PlusNet router that would reduced the wired speed?

One other thing the yellow Ethernet cable they supplied only synced at 100Mbit on my USB-C Ethernet dongle which can run at 2.5GB max.  Used my own and went up to 1000Mbit.

The downstream and upstream on the PlusNet router showed 1000Mbit, presume this is simply the port speed between ONT and their router.

Clearly the Hub 2 isn't up to the job of 900.

I've always used my own routers and proves the point.

Regards

Lee

Correct.

Clearly the Hub 2 isn't up to the job of 900.

AFAIK the Hub 2 should be perfectly capable of 900Mb on a wired connection. Wireless is a different matter, its only Wifi 5 so would likely  max out around  450Mb.

Is anyone getting 900 via wired using their HUB?  Be interested to know

When using a download speed test, remember you are seeing the speed at which your device is drawing data from the Hub.

@finch73  We don't use the Hub 2 but when we upgraded from FTTC to FTTP 900 the standby Hub 2 was used to check the connection. Result:  full speed, no problems.

Re: Full Fibre 900 not getting advertised speed (PlusNet router)

I don't have a fast enough connection to test but I'm fairly sure that the Plusnet Hub 2 would do 900 Mb/s wired.

What you would (most likely) need to do on your Draytek is enable hardware acceleration.

With a Draytek with "hardware acceleration" on I would expect to see a bit over 900Mb/s wired on a nominally 900Mb/s connection (I think they are slightly over-provisioned).

Substituted in the same testing setup I would be surprised if the a Plusnet Hub 2 didn't achieve similar results.

Depending on the capability of the testing computer, it also might be worth getting the Speedtest app rather than using it in a browser.

Re: Full Fibre 900 not getting advertised speed (PlusNet router)

Hi, I used a fairly high spec Windows 11 Surface Laptop with Speedtest (ookla) app. 2.5GB USB-C dongle connected to CAT 6 cable. Only different variable is the router. I would have expected to see 900 ish due to protocol overheads given the both routers have 1gb ports.

The DrayTek router will have hard acceleration and is fairly decent in terms of configurations possible as it’s aimed at small businesses.

On the DrayTek the WiFI was split into separate SSID’s whereas didn’t see an option on the HUB which may account for the WiFi being a bit slower.

With a fairly recent Draytek, it will have hardware acceleration, however you do need to enable it (as I recall it is disabled by default).

You are doing very well on Draytek's wireless (an AX model I assume).
