Re: Broadband speed Full Fibre 145

From that screen, you need to select the 'Preferred band'  property in the List, then set it to Prefer 5ghz

Edit: deleted first part of post

Another than it not connecting to 5 GHz what are you hoping to gain with a 5GHz connection.

I did also mention earlier if you disconnect / connect the WiFi connection (using the WiFi icon in the taskbar system tray - bottom right of the screen) then you might find a reboot is not required. That what I have to do sometimes.

Re: Broadband speed Full Fibre 145

@Mark38 can you please go on your laptop go to settings > networks & internet > wifi > hardware properties.  and screen capture the window and please hide the mac address.

I would like to see the hardware thats driving your laptop's wireless capability and if theres any known issues with the card or driver version

Re: Broadband speed Full Fibre 145

Thank you.

So once I do that, will the laptop always connect to 5Ghz and other devices to 2.4Ghz if needed?

Re: Broadband speed Full Fibre 145

I hoping that it will always connect to 5Ghz because I noticed everytime my speed drops it is connected to 24.Ghz when I check Hub manager and after I restart my laptop the speed goes up to 145 Mbps and when I check the Hub manager it is connected to 5Ghz.

Re: Broadband speed Full Fibre 145

Hi,

I have attached what I got when I first turned on the laptop (2.4 Ghz) then after I restart or do a few restarts it turns to 5Ghz and the speeds are much higher (not 866Mbps but around 145Mbps)

Re: Broadband speed Full Fibre 145

...That's interesting! 866Mhz shown as the 'speed' of the 5GHz Wi-Fi. Is it a 'feature' of 5GHz Wi-Fi chips that they always report the link capabilities rather than the link operating speed? This had me foxed for a while with my Windows PC's dual band USB plugin Wi-Fi adaptor.

Mind you, the PC/Router Ethernet ports always report '1 GHz' whatever the actual data rate. So maybe this is the modern way and only old 2.5GHz Wi-Fi chips actually report operating link speed? - at least at the level of the OS UI.

Re: Broadband speed Full Fibre 145

So if I select Preferred Band - Prefer 5GHZ band does that mean that everytime I turn on the laptop it should connect to 5GHz? and if so will other devices connect to 2.4GHz if needed?

Thanks

Re: Broadband speed Full Fibre 145

It SHOULD do, yes. As long as it has a reasonable 5ghz signal then it should automatically connect to the 5ghz band.

It wont affect any other devices

Re: Broadband speed Full Fibre 145

@Mark38

Having suffering from the same issue where my HP laptop keeps settling on 2.4GHz rather than 5GHz I've done some further research.

Regardless of the setting setting to "Preferred Band - Prefer 5GHz" I am still occasionally connect to 2.4GHz on first switch on. There is another setting to try

Screenshot 2025-11-25 114146.jpg

Roaming Aggressiveness - A higher setting makes the adapter aggressively seek out other access points or switch to a "better" (often 2.4GHz) signal.

I have just changed my laptop setting to 'Lowest'  to see if this removes the problem.

Using a cmd window you can check what the current Wifi connection is "C:\>netsh wlan show interfaces

Look at lines

Receive rate (Mbps) : 433.3
Transmit rate (Mbps) : 433.3
Signal : 88%

Re: Broadband speed Full Fibre 145

can the hub2 support

a) manaul band changing on the 2.4ghz range

b) different ssids for the 2.4ghz and 5ghz radios ?

The 7265 doesn't support mimo even though its a 2x2 desgin. also @Mark38 has year old drivers for the 7265, that said at this point i'm not puting much weight on that at this stage

Re: Broadband speed Full Fibre 145

@Dan_the_Van

Roaming aggressiveness - does this have a delicate balance between avoiding channel / band hopping and seeking the strongest signal?

In a multi station SSID configuration might more aggressive roaming lead to frequent SSID station swapping when multiple WAPs on the same SSID be offering variable similar signal strengths?

Where there’s a tendency to switch from 5GHz to 2.4GHz is that likely to be because the latter has a better signal than the former at that location?  In which case whilst more aggressive might remove stickiness, might it also increase the affinity for the 2.4GHz band?
