broadband battery backup

I've just bought a Broadband battery backup from Vodafone (UPS) but am very disappointed to find that the pin does not fit into my router (too big). The router is a D-Link M60, and it looks like it takes a 3mm or 4mm (can't measure it clearly) instead of the 5mm provided on the Vodafone backup.  Anyone know if it's possible to get an adaptor that would make it possible to use this device?

(I can't find any way to ask this question of Vodafone, which has not been a good start.)

Re: broadband battery backup

Assuming that the barrel jack supplied with the UPS is the common 5.5 x 2.1mm, then adapter sets can be found on Amazon & eBay. As well as getting the correct fit, make sure that the actual voltage is correct too. Nearly every barrel connector has +ve to the centre pin these days, but it's worth checking that too.

This set has 3.5 & 4mm OD adapters...

Re: broadband battery backup

thanks for your feedback.

I tried contacting D-link to check the size of existing pin and they didn't know - just thought that it most likely uses a 5.5mm outer barrel with inner pin being, most commonly 2.1mm (or possibly 2.5mm).

The pin on the battery backup > router cable is quite a bit larger, looks like it could be 3.00mm inside.

This is not precise enough for my liking.

I do have exact voltage.amp/power specs, but no idea how to check  +v centre pin. I'd hate to get anything so specialised wrong.

@citroenDS2

Look at the device, you should see something like below to confirm polarity.

Re: broadband battery backup

I'm finding it very difficult find that adaptor.

My router (i think) has a DC plug which is 5.5mm 2.1mm

The plug for the Vodafone battery backup (I think) is a 5.5mm 3.0mm

Anyone been in the same position, and found one?

A typical size for a 3mm centre is 6.5 x 3.0 .

If that's what you have , then this https://www.amazon.co.uk/PNGKNYOCN-Converter-Security-Surveillance-Syste%EF%BC%882-Pack%EF%BC%89/dp/...

MIGHT be suitable...

I'm getting a bit confused now. Is the connector from the UPS a female connector? i.e. does it have a hollow centre like most regular barrel connectors? Does the DC input connector on the router have the centre pin?

If you think the router takes a standard 5.5 x 2.1, and the UPS has a 5.5 X 3.0, then it should still fit, but the inner pin might not make a connection, as it's a 2.1mm pin inside a 3.0mm hole.

Does the UPS connector push into the router's connector at all?

Re: broadband battery backup

Both the UPS and router plugs are male - obviously the UPS would replace the router plug, if I could get it to fit (it's too big). I was looking for an adaptor that would enable me to overcome that incompatibility.

I've since read that BT use a very unusual, if not uniquely, sized DC plug (and therefore socket) which seems to make it very difficult to use the vodafone broadband battery backup with other routers.

Anyway, after extensive searches for adaptors, without success, I've sent it back.

I still want to find a UPS that will do the job for both the router + the modem, but I suspect that the unusual BT modem/ONT socket size is the key obstacle that will make it most unlikely.

Re: broadband battery backup

@citroenDS

Now I'm even more confused! Your original post was about a D-Link M60 router, but now you mention that BT use an unusual sized connector? How are the 2 companies connected?

Generally the male connector is on the actual device, as it contains a pin, and the female is on the lead that plugs into it, as it is hollow. While the "plugs" on the end of the power leads can sometimes have a pin, it's not usual.

Anyway, as you have now sent the device back, it's academic.

Edit...I've just noticed that the OP had a slightly different name. Do you have 2 accounts? Are you also citroenDS2?

The Plusnet Hub 2 uses a 5.5 x 3mm barrel connector, which from an earlier post I gather is the same size as the Voda UPS. So in what way doesn't it fit?

Normally the problem is finding an adapter to mate a UPS 5.5 x 2.1 output to the Plusnet Hub. I have found one here: https://toothbrushbattery.com/buy/bt-smart-hub-home-hub-dc-power-plug-adaptor/
