Unable to connect to certain websites

I can connect to it instantly. Sounds like one of those old 'Routing issues' that we have seen before.

dnschecker.org have a tracing tool. There's a blockage at step 5, helpfully identified as ? ? ?

I did the trace again with the VPN turned on and got the same result but the website loads.

Try enabling and disabling Apple Relay, it works like a VPN when enabled.

I understand you need an iCloud+ account to access Private Relay. I don't have that and I'm using Firefox (same behaviour on Safari for what it's worth)

That 'blockage' could well be because that server doesn't respond to ping requests - some don't.

Also, the response times from hop 7 onwards look a little 'long'.

This website is not helpful, because it does a trace from some where in the world that we know not.

It is your computer / your connection that has this issue.
You need a trace from you own laptop / computer to these websites.

Thanks, that makes sense. So to run trace a route on Mac just run 'traceroute <domain>' via the command line.

The screenshots attached are without (when it stalls) and then with the VPN.

Have you had any drops overnight? It could have been  an issue with your public IP.

Not to my knowledge. I've read related posts which seem to indicate an IP problem.

If it was an 'IP  problem', then only a change of IP,  which would in involve a PPP drop, would have solved it.
