Service showing as outside UK

Evening,

New to Plusnet, been with them for 11 days without any issues, tonight both Paramount and Disney think that I'm trying to access their services from outside the UK?

The router hasn't rebooted and has been up from 11 days but running whatsmyip shows the following

ISP: BT Americas Inc.

Services: Datacentre

City: London

Region: England

Country: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

The only thing I can see is that the ISP is registering as outside the UK so those streaming providers think that I'm out of the country as Disney says I can see that you are travelling when I run the application.

Any advice apart from turning off the router for 15 minutes and hoping that it picks up a different IP?

Thanks

Re: Service showing as outside UK

@dsg2035 If you read that 'whatsmyip' report, it shows the IP, although initially a BT Americas one, is registered in the UK. Some companies are slow to update their IP  location data (and I have noticed a lot of these are US conglomerates).

You could try forcing a new IP, but Plusnets are rather sticky - an overnight switch off will have a greater chance of changing it, but still no guarantees.

Re: Service showing as outside UK

I've got the exact same issue - had to call Disney yesterday who fixed it as my IP address to them was outside the UK and now tonight I've got issues with netflix.

Re: Service showing as outside UK

This not Plusnets fault - these IP ranges have been in the UK for some time, but as I said previously, some concerns are  lax at updating their databases.

Re: Service showing as outside UK

@jab1 Thank you for the information, the question is now how do I stand with an ISP who can provide the service I have signed up for but I now have limited use of it due to others not having updated their systems with the correct IP information?

Also why has it taken 11 days for this to become an issue for me if the IP range was blocked why did I not encounter this as an issue from day 1 I've been happily watching things on both Disney and Paramount since the service went live?

As the issue is IP related who do I now approach to get it resolved or is it a case of wait and hope that it gets resolved or do I have to contact each provider and ask them to whitelist my IP address so that I'm able to access the service?

Would this not be something that the ISP should chase resolve and not leave it up to the individual as my contract is with them and I can't remember seeing in any of the literature come to Plusnet but don't expect everything to work as it did with your original ISP which in my case was BT.

Re: Service showing as outside UK

Is the IP block assigned via ARIN, RIPE, APNIC (or some other minor concerns)?

I'm having to assume RIPE, and possibly data scraped from RIPE included the word 'America' and a bad assumption was forthcoming. Or perhaps the original assignment of the IP block was via ARIN? Insufficient data.

Re: Service showing as outside UK

Exactly the same issue. We've been with Plusnet for a couple of years and have never had this problem before. It seems that something has changed today.  Netflix and Paramount Plus both state that our IP address is located in the US.  IP is 150.143.x.x.  It seems that the whois data stating that this range belongs to BT Americas inc is the cause of the issue. I'm guessing that these services use the the same geolocation provider and they have updated the location for this IP range to the United States.  Please can someone at Plusnet inform BT to get this sorted out.  If it goes on much longer it will necessitate changing ISP.

The IPv4 stuff is a bit of a mess.

APNIC addreses moving to ARIN and then (apparently) not moving via bt to RIPE?

Re: Service showing as outside UK

This'll possibly be a clampdown on shared accounts of disney (and the rest of the streaming services)?

Re: Service showing as outside UK

@dsg2035 You are still, apparently, blaming Plusnet for the errors/omissions of third parties. It has possibly 'taken 11 days' because maybe your public IP changed sometime late Sunday or sometime on Monday due to your connection being reset for some reason - have you checked the router error log?

As I am self-taught (over a 30+ year period), there are 'gaps' in my knowledge, but AIUI, it is not an issue of 'getting the provider(s) to 'whitelist' your IP', rather for Disney/whoever to update their IP databases so that their records reflect the true country of registration - in this case, the UK.

It is not up to an ISP  to ensure third-parties maintain correct records.

Have you turned off your router overnight, as I suggested above, to try and change your public IP?

@Dan_the_Van Looks like this might be a recent IP range transfer?

@jab1

IP Location via IP2Location shows the IP is ORGANIZATION: BT Americas Inc.

Re: Service showing as outside UK

OK @Dan_the_Van , I accept that, but I always thought the location was what mattered, and AFAIK, on the 'whatsmyip' data shared earlier in this thread, it was showing as 'London, UK'.

Anyway, I'll leave it to you, I have a busy day.
