Hi
Could I please ask for my hostname to be anonymised? When making a reverse IP lookup, it displays as my account name.
Thanks.
Fixed! Go to the fix.

Hi.
I'm not sure where I'm at with this now. I've done everything asked of me by the tech team, but the issue has still not been resolved and I've not received any communication for three weeks.
I spoke to someone in the tech team earlier today, who seems to think that the problem is not resolvable without risking completely breaking my connection. Before I make the final decision as to whether to stick with Plusnet or take the enforced move to EE, is it possible to confirm the following:
1. Am I actually on a static IP, dynamic IP or sticky IP?
2. Is it possible to remove my account username from the rDNS?
Many thanks for any help with this as it's making my brain ache 😄

If the rDNS shows <accountname>.plus.com then you ARE on a static IP. Dynamic IP's show as <ip>.dyn.plus.net
However, that you are asking the question implies that you didnt request a static IP ? do you actually need one ?
2. Is it possible to remove my account username from the rDNS?
It IS. The rDNS for a static IP can be anonomised to <ip>.plus.com

Many thanks for your reply and confirming that I am on a static IP.
The rDNS definitely shows as <accountname>.plus.com and with each reboot of the router, my IP has stayed the same. I do not recall ever requesting or opting for a static IP. I can't see that I would have, as I have no need for one. It's all very strange.
It would be good if PN could anonymise the IP, it would be even better if they could put me on a dynamic IP 😊

@Tulipa despite the fact that you are recent to the forum, you must have had your Plusnet account for quite a while as static IPs havent been available to new accounts for some time now!.
Do you have the Broadband Firewall enabled on your account ? if so, do you need it ?
An Enabled firewall will cause a static IP to be applied. Disabling the firewall and restarting the PPPoE connection ( or rebooting the router) will revert to a dynamic IP

@MisterW Yes, I've had this account for over nine years. The tech guy that I spoke to earlier said that PN went through a phase of setting up accounts with static IPs about 10-15 years ago? I guess that this could be the case.
The firewall on my hub is set to 'default' and the broadband firewall is set to 'low'. Should these both be set to off/disabled, or just the broadband firewall?
Thank you so much for your help so far 😊

The Hub firewall should be left at 'default' , only the Broadband firewall should be set to OFF. Having changed the settings, the PPPoE connection has to be dropped and reconnected for the change to take effect. You can either do that by a disconnect/reconnect from the Hub GUI or just reboot the router.

The only reason static IPs were set on some accounts goes back to the dial-up days. You could add another phone number so you could dial up when not at home. The static IP had to be applied to prevent the connection being used from both locations at the same time. I cant remember how long ago that was but I've had my static ever since then. I do use/need mine though as it is configured on the Office PBX firewall to allow me to connect from home

That's great, thank you for the extra information, and for explaining it so succinctly.
I'm pretty sure that I don't need a static IP (I'm not self-hosting, and no access to remote servers is required), I think it makes more sense for me to be on a dynamic IP address. Although from what I've read on the forum, the local pool of IP addresses can be somewhat limited anyway? There's so much info out there, it's sometimes difficult to know what the right course of action is!
Anyway, I'll switch off the firewall as suggested and see how I get on. I'll report back later 👍
