Extender not connecting

Hello

I am on Plusnet Full Fibre 500 since April. Everything perfect until recently; now the wi-fi signal in my bedroom upstairs is either very poor or non-existent on my laptop.

I bought some Power Line Adaptors and I now get 45mbps on my laptop via the ethernet cable which is adequate.

But when the laptop is downstairs next to the Ultra Hub 2 I get 300mbps via wi-fi. So I thought if I got an extender upstairs I would get better speeds in my bedroom. I was previously with Vodafone, and neither of my 2 Vodafone boosters will connect via WPS, so I bought

WiFi Extender Booster 1200Mbps - Jakkin - Lightning Protected Dual Band Range Extender, 4 Antennas, Covers 1500sq.ft, Works with All UK Routers

from Amazon, and after 2 days of trying with WPS I can't connect this either. I just tried disabling the 5ghz channel as I read on here and that hasn't worked either. This extender has 3 modes: AP (Access Point), Repeater and it can also act as a router, it has a WAN and a LAN port.

Has anyone got any other suggestions or shall I just send it back and make do with the 45mbps via the power line adaptor for my laptop?

I have a feeling that no extenders will ever sync with the Plusnet Ultra Hub 2.

Incidentally when I plug in my laptop directly into the hub downstairs via an ethernet cable I only get 95mbps. This is because the ethernet card/port is capped at 100mbps on my laptop. When my neighbour plugged his ipad into my hub via ethernet cable yesterday he got 630mbps!

Clearly nothing wrong with the hub other than you can't sync any extenders to it!

Re: Extender not connecting

@Kevin13

I get 300mbps via wi-fi

300Mbps could be the limit for the speed of the wireless interface of your laptop.

On a 900 Mbps Full Fibre my HP laptop gives me 300 download and 100 upload where as my Pixel 7 Pro gives me

650 down and 100 up.

With the extenders have you tried the TP-Link tether app? Error, search gave incorrect result.

Which option are you using ?  Access Point mode needs to be wired back to the router. Repeater mode the unit needs to be positioned between router and your bedroom.

Re: Extender not connecting

I am using repeater mode. Its the most straightforward. I press the WPS button on the hub and it starts blinking blue. I press the WPS button on the extender and there's a green light which starts flashing. It's supposed to go solid green. It just goes off after a few minutes. They are positioned next to each other.

Fix

I see it has a simple browser interface, have you tried that ? You may get a clue as to how it working and what details are required.

Re: Extender not connecting

In the list of available networks it comes up as "no Internet, secured" which means it won't display any Web pages. So if I click on it nothing happens.

I can't believe that no one has been able to sync an extender to the plusnet ultra hub 2. Perhaps it's configured this way deliberately?

Re: Extender not connecting

There will be a way.  Unfortunately I don't use the supplied Hub2 and all powerlines were ditched years ago mainly due to frustration.

Ther's a good crowd on this forum and hopefully someone with experience or knowlege of your problem will be able to help.

@Kevin13

Are you syncing the repeater with the two devices close together? If not, try again with the hub and repeater in the same room.

Re: Extender not connecting

Having no internet connection when using a web browser should not prevent you from connecting to the device, it's just letting you know there is no internet access for the chosen wifi.

Maybe move the Hub and Extender apart by a few metres I've had odd issues when on top of each other, another thought it maybe worth turning off 5GHz on the Hub to see if the helps with WPS.

Re: Extender not connecting

The hub is in the downstairs hallway. I am placing the extender literally 6 inches away on the same table that the hub is on. Then pressing the WPS on both devices.

I have tried with the 5Ghz channel disabled.

No joy.

Re: Extender not connecting

YES.

I used my phone as it says in the instructions to set it up manually. This has worked perfectly.

When I place it in the hallway upstairs outside my bedroom I get about 25mbps. But when I place it in my bedroom a few feet away from my laptop I get between 80 and 110mbps. Much better than the 45mbps via the power line adapter.

The minimum guaranteed speed on this package is 275mbps but I can't complain because I know its my equipment at fault not the plusnet hub.

Now I can have Teams meetings on my laptop anywhere and get a good connection.
