Can I Install Wordpress In My Free Webspace

Can anyone please tell me if it's possible to install Wordpress in the free websapce provided by Plusnet?
I am uncertain/confused that they even meet the minimum requirements;

  • PHP 4.3 or greater

  • MySQL 4.0 or greater

  • The mod_rewrite Apache module

Can anyone please advise me?

Ta.  If you discover any errors or enhancements that need to be made could you please document them and I'll get the tutorial updated.

Re: Can I Install Wordpress In My Free Webspace

OK I am nearly there, however I couldn't figure out how to change wordpress, username, password, and local host to my MySQL details (in the Setting up your MySQL details section) in the shell. What I did was edited the wp-config.php file in Notepad, however I am getting a Database Error- "Error establishing a database connection";

  • for DB_NAME I used the databse set up for me by Plusnet

  • for MySQL database username I used my Plusnet username

  • for MySQL database password I used the password provided (by Plusnet email) when MySQL was activated

  • for MySQL hostname I used the web address for my blog http://www.username.plus.net/blog

Are these settings correct? Are there more settings I need to change?
I am not convinced they are and I have not had time to play around with the settings yet.
Incidentally in MySQL under Create new database: Documentation it shows No Privileges; is this correct?
Can you please give me some advice on what the settings should be?

Re: Can I Install Wordpress In My Free Webspace

MySQL hostname needs to be either rumpus or humbug, the MySQL activation email will say which one it is.

Re: Can I Install Wordpress In My Free Webspace

OK now I am confused; from what I have managed to research (today) on this, is that in 99% of cases this should remain localhost Huh
Regarding the Create new database: Documentation it shows No Privileges; is this correct?
Would I be better to create a new database for my blog or use the default provided by Plusnet?

Re: Can I Install Wordpress In My Free Webspace

In a lot of cases it should be localhost, but on our platform the MySQL servers are physically separate from the ccgi servers, so you need to use either rumpus or humbug. The correct one will be in the activation email.
You won't have permission to create your own database, so you'll need to use the one created for you, which will contain your username and either _pn, _f9 or _fol depending on the vISP you signed up with. Again this is in your activation email.

Re: Can I Install Wordpress In My Free Webspace

And since you only have one database, you should use (if wordpress allows it) a database table name prefix (Normally something like WP_)
This prefix is added to all table names used by the application (in your case wordpress) and allows you to have multiple applications using the same database, without risk of having the same table name.

Re: Can I Install Wordpress In My Free Webspace

Fantastic  Smiley I used the correct MySQL hostname (rumpus) and I have now installed my blog successfuly  Cheesy
The only thing I would now like to do is rather than use http://ccgi.username.plus.com/blog i would like to be able to use the address http://www.username.plus.com/blog (or even http://www.username.plus.com). Is this possible?

Re: Can I Install Wordpress In My Free Webspace

Unfortunately that's not possible, it's a limitation of our Domain Control System.
