Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

@jab1

"Presumably, this confusing 'guidance' from Greenby is because they used AI to generate a lot of it, and failed miserably to validate it."

Hah! I previously speculated those FAQ pages might have been generated by their Bot (as people claim it gives the same advice) and maybe their Bot got it's info from the Plusnet Forum. 🤣

Could be the other way around, I suppose.

Maybe the AI agent they used was very unintelligent and failed to get its 'information' from official sources, as some of the other 'replies' it gives are also, to put it politely, questionable.

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

@jab1

Presumably though, as my client is configured with authentication, and has been for a good 15-20 years, the fact that I had no changes to make at all is correct?

Correct, that's how its supposed to work. I can't say for myself personally as my account hasn't migrated yet!. I'm in the next tranche since I have webspace & cgi . Watch this space to see how it goes😀

As you know, my email is almost completely with MB, I've only really kept the PN mail so I can experience the migration in person so as to speak, and gain experience that maybe useful to others.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

Thanks, @MisterW - I think you may have confirmed the same previously.

I shall be closing and deleting my PN  mail  come December 6th, when I am due to renew. I have only left it running to make sure all those who need to know my MB  address are aware - any who haven't contacted me in 12 months are unlikely to do so.

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

@Penny:

The second paragraph in the website text you cite says "Note that all ISPs...". Might that be incorrect and it should read "Note that not all ISPs..."?

If such a basic mistake, what should be obvious to the author on the most cursory of reading of his own words, why should any notice be taken of other statements?

Note also the spelling mistakes "configue" and "compoatible". This is slapdash at best but at worst demonstrates to me that, since they cannot get their English right, their technical advice will not be right either. Somebody said they thought this stuff was generated by AI. If AI is going to get anything right, surely it is the spelling of common words? I'd be fascinited to lurn how AI cann intridice deliberaty misstelt werds to foul us all.

In a later post @jab1 says "The port settings in the Greenby 'knowledge base' are incorrect as is the suggestion to disable security." Which simply supports and rather confirms my point. It's no good certain other people chiding others believing what Greenby says. It's Greenby's responsibility to get things right, not for others to second-guess whether their statements are right or wrong.

I conclude from this that Greenby are incapable and/or unwilling to provide correct information. And if they are not competent providing correct information about their technology, it follows they cannot be competent providing correct technology.

In my case, my email (via Thunderbird) has been stable for time now, but I'm keeping a watch over what's going on because, while I wish to keep my "cherished" email address, I fear the plug could be pulled on this debacle without notice and I don't want to get caught out.

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

Still on the forum and reading about all the problems I would recommend getting out all together.

A few weeks ago someone on the forum advised to try Mythic Beasts for web hosting and email. I did - after about 20 years with Plusnet and various predecessors!. The Plusnet forum was very helpful - thank you -  and everything is now transferred, web hosting, domain names and email. It was a bit of an uphill learning curve but I now have a dashboard where I can see and change everything and excellent email help within a day from Mythic Beasts staff. I also now have working email, a "safe" website, much more webspace and no problems with gmail emails. All at a very reasonable cost.

I hope this is of some help.

Perhaps people should thank Plusnet for driving them into the Mythic Beasts paradise they would not have discovered if they had not been emigrated to Greenby.

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

Good point, @redsox9  - although I had been considering such a move not long after the fiasco started, and once I was transferred and discovered it took five refusals of connection every morning to connect to the mail servers, I was convinced, and made the move as soon as I could.

It still takes the same hassle, but I will live with it to the first week of December, having paid for a years service, but after that, bye-bye Greenby.

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

I still can't get outgoing email to work using mail.enmail.co or relay.plus.net. Port 465 SSL/TLS gives a valid "Test Server" response with either server. This is from a Thunderbird client.

On Greenby settings for outgoing email it shows relay.plus.net, port 465, encryption enabled, maybe this is SSL/TLS, but from previously in this forum relay.plus.net hasn't yet been linked across.

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

I received the transfer email end of last week for my old ic24.net email address which is also my email address and user ID for my plusnet broadband. For some reason in my email it says it will be free for only 30 days before payment is needed with greenby but I am a plusnet broadband customer so it is supposed to be free for 2 years?  Where and how do I escalate this to ensure I don't pay for the first two years?

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

I never got a migration email and found (the hard way) I'd been migrated AND soon after in came the demand for payment due after only 30 days free.

Rather than fighting the Greenby BotRot, I phoned PlusNet to ask a real person to confirm that I had PlusNet Broadband AND that my email address was linked to the Broadband (it was on the bill every month but wot BotRot reads anything), and the real person kindly raised a ticket under PlusNet's name with Greenby.

I was then told by Greenby my email wouldn't be suspended at the end of 30 days and it might take them l  o  n  g time to confirm the two years. It wasn't suspended but I've never heard anything since.

Try that!

I'm using relay.plus.net
StartTLS
Port 587
Authentication: normal password

As I understand it, port 465 is deprecated, and SSL/TLS is for the incoming server.  While StartTLS is for the outgoing server.  I've seen in more than one place that StartTLS is all encrypted anyway, so you don't need to select 'encrypted password'.

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

@chrish9070

Hi there - check your account as there will be a contact on it which probably confirms your free for two years. If not, we can easily fix. One point though, your old ic24 account isn't your broadband username.

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

Hi Tony @plusnettony

Thank you for responding, I appreciate it.  I have just logged in and cannot see any 'contact' at all. The email I received from plusnet just last week says free for 30 days, not the 2 years it mentions on the website.

I can only say what I see whether I login at plusnet website in account settings and also what I see and have set as the incoming mail server which shows my ic24.net email as my username.  It maybe different on the router settings for the broadband directly as you say but I have never been informed of what it is in the 10+ years I have been with plusnet.  If there is another username for that no one has ever communicated that to me so I would have no idea what it is!

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

Thanks Tim-j,
this didn't work I'm afraid.
Incoming mail just dropped out for a few minutes. Greenby webmail said I don't have any mailboxes, but when I tried to re-create it, it already existed!!
I guess if the connection to the server tests OK (using the link in Windows 10) then the problem is with username and password combination. i already have to use different passwords for webmail and incoming email to the client (Thunderbird).
