Unable to reply to emails.

See attached error message.

For years and years I have extensively used alternative Identities in Thunderbird so that external organisations (a) don't get hold of my default Identity which I consider private (b) I can track the origins of rubbish sent to me (c) I can block said rubbish. This has been and still is a major selling point of the plusnet email format. And it has been incredibly useful over the years. It's embedded in the way I run my financial and other affairs.

Is this error temporary, or can it possibly be true that I cannot reply to anyone who emails me using the email address they have on file? I fear, seeing another thread, that this error might be permanent. I'll wait for responses before I burst with fury not just at the withdrawal of this fundamental facility but more at not even being made aware of its withdrawal.

Is the ability to receive emails with a different identity being withdrawn? If so, I would be utterly jiggered (insert your own expletive).

Until then, is there a workaround? In simple-man's terms please.

Re: Unable to reply to emails.

Fix

For sending from alternative identities (aka aliases) they must now be configured explicitly in the Greenby portal.

This requirement does not impact the catch all functionality anything@ will still be received.

Re: Unable to reply to emails.

Thank you - I've tried that and it worked. It's a sigh of relief.

I will still have to remember to establish the alternative email in both T'Bird and Greenby - and it's yet more keystrokes and activity to do the same thing. Nothing like making one's own life more complicated than it need be for someone else's convenience.

Re: Unable to reply to emails.

It is not a convenience consideration but rather protection of the reputation of the email servers.  Being able to send email as from any old address (as practised by scammers) damages the reputation of email services giving rise to poor sender reputations.

These measures are tedious for good folks but for bad folks, they are exceedingly inconvenient.

Re: Unable to reply to emails.

Dear Mr Townman, PlusNet's PlusNet managed to do it for twenty years without any issue.. There's no reason why Greenby's PlusNet shouldn't do the same. You will argue otherwise no doubt but that's my settled view. This migration was supposed to be a 'do-nothing' migration. Not only has it turned out to not be a 'do-nothing' migration that PlusNet's puff had led us all to believe and expect, Greenby never bothered to tell anybody what the 'do-something's were. I am past the point of silently accepting inconvenience on my part for the convenience of others. I know I'm wasting my breath but as far as I am concerned Greenby's reputation is shot. I would be more sympathetic towards a new way of doings things were there to be any sort of engagement with me. There hasn't been, so telling me it's not a "convenience consideration but rather protection of the reputation" of Greenby is not a mollifying response - it's a chiding response and I'm in no mood to take it kindly. I'm sure may other others will understand my position and perhaps even sympathise with it.
