Sending emails via satellite connection

I’m unable to send emails when connected via my Brady satellite - I’ve set authentication (password) as it’s not a Plusnet connection. Are there any other settings I should change? Thanks in advance.

Re: Sending emails via satellite connection

@outinthesticks does your email client give any more detail on the reason for not sending ?

There are other reasons for being unable to send on 'foreign' connections.

You might try the telnet diagnostic as outlined in this thread https://community.plus.net/t5/Email/Can-receive-but-not-send-emails/m-p/1991421 to establish the exact reason for not being able to send

Thanks - I get a message to say username or password for SMTP (my name) @relay.plus.net is incorrect.

Re: Sending emails via satellite connection

@outinthesticks is that the error message from the email client ?

I'm afraid most clients are not very good at reporting the error correctly. If they fail to send then they usually just report a username/password error.

You really need to try the telnet diagnostic, as that will return an smtp code and error message which will identify the real cause of the error.

Re: Sending emails via satellite connection

Thanks, this is appreciated but using the telnet diagnostic is a bit beyond my technical capabilities, especially as I'm using a Mac, so I guess I'll need to contact technical support.

Which email client are you using, the @ is not required for the SMTP server name field it is relay.plus.net

Have you used webmail https://webmail.plus.net/ to check your email address name / password pair?

Re: Sending emails via satellite connection

I'm afraid my Mac experience is non-existent so I can't really help there.

I suspect tech support aren't going to be much help. They will likely ask if you can send ok using webmail and if that works then they won't be able to help further.

Hopefully someone with some Mac experience will be along to assist...

Re: Sending emails via satellite connection

Depending on the version of macOS you have Telnet is unlikely to be installed by default.

Do you have homebrew installed as that's the easiest way to get telnet onto your machine.

Re: Sending emails via satellite connection

Thanks I’m using relay.plus.net - the SMTP reference was in the error message. I’ve just discovered that emails will send from webmail. Still unclear why they won’t go via Outlook for Mac (v 16.92) ?

If the email account is functional, then they will send from webmail. Since, when using webmail, you are effectively sending from a server on the Plusnet network. When sending via your Mac , you are sending from a public IP allocated by your ISP. You are therefor subject to authentication and IP checks. If you are sure your authentication is correct, then you may still be prevented from sending due to the reputation of the IP you've been allocated.

Do you know if your ISP uses CGNAT ? that means that the 'real' public IP is shared by many users and can often result in a IP reputation issue

Re: Sending emails via satellite connection

A thought

To test the Public IP address theory, create a hotspot using a smart phone and try using that.

Re: Sending emails via satellite connection

Thanks - and to everyone else for their suggestions. I’ve since discovered a simple solution - turn on my VPN & hey presto emails send without any trouble!
