Re: SMTP error 452 (too many recipients in the last hour)

We didn't get a 'watch this space' email or a 60-day warning email. Only a 30 day warning and apparently we were migrated yesterday but haven't had any confirmation or info from Greenby. So it appears the execution of the communication strategy for this project is patchy at best.

Re: SMTP error 452 (too many recipients in the last hour)

There are various metrics, not disclosed for clear security reasons.

Users will receive communication when their cohort is scheduled.  The cohorts are divided by a combination of...

  • Having an identified current broadband account
  • Brand
  • User of webmail
  • Having a hosted domain
  • Having a hosted website
  • Having the cgi and database platform
  • Then probably letter of the alphabet

The further you are down that list, the later is your cohort.  Using webmail and having none of the rest will pull you to the front.  Personally I have all of the above and am content to simply wait patiently until they get to the end.

I do not understand the clamour around this; it will happen when it happens and it should be largely non-disruptive.  Frankly its better to wait, so that if there are gremlins, they have a chance of being fixed before your turn arrives.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Re: SMTP error 452 (too many recipients in the last hour)

@Townman I totally agree with your last paragraph - when it happens, it happens, and if there no problems, great. Equally, if there are problems users need to shout up.

Out if interest, where do those of us with 'mail only' accounts come in the pecking order? I''m not worried, just curious.

Depends.

There are various types of 'mail only' accounts. We have mail only with added extras (such as domains) which haven't been done yet, and of course Plusnet mail only.

Mine is 'mail only' (ex Plusnet) with no 'added extras', @plusnettony . As said though, I'm not worried, it will happen when it happens.

I welcome further examples of this, but have raised directly to the supplier.

So is it related to the number of emails that a given user Y (with addresses X@Y.force9.co.uk) sends, or is it the number of emails that all users (all the Ys) send through relay.force9.net?

There is a mixture of triggers, but all discussion is that for a normal non-abusive user 'Y'  the blocking comes from some kind of aggregate 'count up' across a large number of users 'Y' sending through a small number of route(s).

So closer to your latter premise, but not as simplistic as all of 'relay.branding.net'.  The exact count up arrangement is withheld for security reasons.

The counter is reported to reset on the hour, so sending at hh:01 usually works.

Re: SMTP error 452 (too many recipients in the last hour)

I've started to see the "too many recipient" issue return over the last couple of days (Force9 account) - as before, issue temporarily resolves on the hour.

@d-dixon That is strange. Have you been migrated to Greenby or not?

From August to early December (when my Force9 account was migrated) there were few days I did not see these errors. From then I have not had any - and to monitor this I have been sending an email at 4 minutes to every hour from 8am to 10pm every day, apart from a gap of 3 weeks.

@mavison thanks - not migrated as far as I'm aware.  I'm probably in the "difficult" bucket as I have a Plusnet-hosted domain.

Re: SMTP error 452 (too many recipients in the last hour)

How do people know when they have been migrated to Greenby? What is the sequence of notifications that should be received? The last communciation I've had is Plusnet's "Migrations will take place on 18 January". For those people who have definitely been migrated, should there be any communication from Greenby to say "we now adminster your email"? And is that email sent to every mailbox, or only to postmaster@<username>.plus.com or postmaster@<username>.force9.co.uk (given that few peoplke ever monitor "postmaster@"?

Does Greenby's webmail still use the same username notation of the form "username+mailbox" and with the same password as was used for Plusnet's webmail?

Does the fact that Plusnet's webmail still accepts logins and has up-to-date email tend to suggest that migration has ot yet happened? I presume so!

It would be useful if PN had said "you will receive an email from Greenby saying XYZ" so you know that if you don't receive it, you haven;t yet been migrated.

What is the situation with PN email accounts that no longer are associated with a PN internet account? Do they get migrated automatically or is any manual intervention required from the user? Given that Greenby will be charging for those accounts, how do they contact people to set up a direct debit?

So many unanswered questions. So much misinformation - PN even said that our email had been migrated ages ago to Greenby, but PN's webmail still has up to date email messages, so presumably it hasn't.

And what is the situation about PN webspace and a domain that points to it? Will that all be migrated seamlessly, with the PN FTP server and username/password remaining the same? PN don't seem to know.

I get the distinct impression that PN are lobbing the ball over into Greenby's court and not checking whether Greenby are picking it up. A very sloppy process.

Re: SMTP error 452 (too many recipients in the last hour)

I got a single email titled 'Welcome to Greenby'. it was addressed to uuuu@uuuu.plus.com and was copied to my other email account that I registered. Only the one arrived and I can't figure out which one it was.

I have webspace and it is still active. I haven't had need to put up any updates since receiving the Welcome email so I am assuming it is no change to the ftp login sequence. Fingers crossed.

Re: SMTP error 452 (too many recipients in the last hour)

@d-dixon Your use of a domain probably explains why you have not yet been migrated.

@martinund Are you sure the email from Plusnet said "Migrations will take place on 18 January" or was it from that date, as mine did?

My letter also said that "Greenby will be in touch when the transfer is complete" and indeed I got a "Welcome to Greenby" email from them a few weeks after the Plusnet email.

The emails are sent to your contact addresses, just as @offscotland has said. ... but some users have said they did not get any.

As a Force9 user myself, I had to make no changes to server settings ... but I had been using the latest recommended ones for some time.
