Re: Problems sending to gmail

This morning I sent a test message from self@account.plus.com to us@gmail.com and it was delivered almost immediately.

I then sent the same message from wife@account.plus.com to us@gmail.com. 70 minutes later an NDR, just like before, was received. And again a couple of hours later. So, effectively hopeless.

Given that quite a high percentage of people seem to be on gmail, unless this can be resolved, I can see it being the end of our long association with Plusnet email.

Re: Problems sending to gmail

@MisterW

Today's test was an email from wife@account.plus.com to us@gmail.com.

It was sent at 16.07. It is now 22.50 and there has been no delivery and no NDR (and yes, I've looked in her Spam folder).

It has been 4 days since gmail first took umbrage at our Plusnet emails. Clearly, "temporarily rate limited" seems to be heading towards "permanently completely discarded".

I'd be grateful if you could let the "relevant people" know about this latest deterioration.

Thank you.

Hi @abitpedantic

Thanks for highlighting this issue to us.

If you're still experiencing this issue this morning, could you check your email headers and send over the information please?

If there's any personal infomation in the headers, please send me over a Private message.

You can find information on how to find the infomation on our email headers help page.

Re: Problems sending to gmail

@Chris_S

I can confirm its still happening. A test message to my gmail account yesterday has still not been delivered and no NDR. Test message this morning looks to the same. A message from my externally hosted domain to my gmail account is delivered instantly!

I've already added my comments to the gmail problems thread in the SU space

Hi @MisterW

Thanks for your feedback.

We're sending examples to our support team to get them reviewed.

If you haven't sent an example to us yourself yet, I'd be happy to send that over for you.

Re: Problems sending to gmail

@Chris_S  For info, the test mail sent this morning arrived after around 3 minutes. Yesterdays still hasnt arrived.

I'm sure that if the headers were useful, then Tony would have asked for them in the SU thread

Re: Problems sending to gmail

@Chris_S  @MisterW

Thank you for pursuing this. I'm relieved that I'm not the only one having problems with gmail. I wonder how many other people think their emails are being delivered when they're not!

Note that the first NDR said:

".... Gmail has detected an unusual rate of mail originating from your SPF 421-4.7.28 domain .... To protect our users from 421-4.7.28 spam, mail sent from your domain has been temporarily rate limited. ...."

while the second NDR said:

".... Gmail has detected that this message is likely 550-5.7.1 unsolicited mail. To reduce the amount of spam sent to Gmail, this 550-5.7.1 message has been blocked ...."

The third time there was no NDR (perhaps they couldn't think of anything new to say!). I sent another test message 20 minutes ago and it hasn't arrived so I'll wait and see whether I get an NDR and then I'll PM the headers for the two earlier failures.

Re: Problems sending to gmail

@Chris_S @MisterW

NDR of the "421-4.7.28" type received after 67 minutes. I'll forward a couple of NDR headers although at the moment I can't see how to attach a pdf to a PM.

Re: Problems sending to gmail

@Chris_S

It seems one can't attach a pdf to a PM. Anyway, I've now sent the text (a pair of NDRs and their headers) to @Lesley_W .

There seems to be a lot of moaning therein about lack of SPF and DKIM. I hope it makes some sort of sense to you guys!

Which, surely, is inherently and unavoidably coming from some "domain"?

A further thought on this. What if by "domain" is meant originating IP address?

I have (for whatever reason) a static Plusnet IP address, so my PN email domain name @<user name>.plus.com will always resolve to the same user IP address (it has done for years) - <My IP>.plus.com. Most people now have dynamic IP addresses, so their PN domain name will resolve to different IP addresses from time to time.

If somebody in the past has used a current dynamic PN IP address to send out Spam, then that particular IP address may be on a Black List. If picked up now by some passing and wholly innocent PN user it could mean a Bad Reputation allocated to a perfectly innocent user, resulting in email failures that have nothing to do with the current user of that (temporary) IP.

This could be why some people (like myself) do not appear to suffer from these problems, while others do out of the blue and why it comes and goes. If this is the case it could be a difficult problem to resolve.

Could this be an unexpected benefit of having a static IP address?

Re: Problems sending to gmail

@Chris_S  I confirm that this is happening and has been for me for over one week. Here's a transcript of my AI Chat with Greenby the other day . . . .

My email address is roger@rmhunt.plus.com and I was with Plusnet.

I have been sending emails to universeofcolourphotography@gmail.com regularly over the past several years. Since April 3rd I have sent two emails to that address and neither have been received by the recipient.
I have tested this again today to try to find the reason.
Looking on webmail, the following reason is given:

This is the mail system at host gateway1.enmail.co.

I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not
be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached below.

For further assistance, please send mail to postmaster.

If you do so, please include this problem report. You can
delete your own text from the attached returned message.

I have no idea what is going on and why after sending to this email address for several years, it now rejects the email.

#24671 - Sent email being rejected by gmail

Hi Roger, thanks for providing those details.

I'm sorry to see you're having trouble sending emails to that Gmail address. Looking at the error message you've provided, it appears that Gmail's filters are flagging the messages as unsolicited.

We're aware of issues with delivery, either emails going into spam, or delivery issues to Gmail, iCloud, and other providers relating to DKIM (a type of email authentication).

We are working with BT to resolve this as quickly as possible. We are aiming to have this solved within a week, but we cannot be more accurate than this currently.

While we did have some brief performance issues earlier today which have now been resolved, this specific delivery block is part of that wider investigation. We appreciate your patience while we get this sorted.

The issue has been happening for me since April 3rd and it's now April 10th. When you say a week to solve it, does that mean a week from now ?

I understand the frustration, especially as this has been an ongoing issue for you since the 3rd of April.

When I mention that we are aiming to have this resolved within a week, that is an estimate from today (April 10th). We are working as quickly as possible with BT to address the underlying authentication issues (DKIM) causing these blocks with providers like Gmail.

Unfortunately, we cannot be more accurate than that timeframe at the moment. I can see there were some specific performance issues earlier today and a couple of days ago that have since been resolved, but the broader delivery issue you're experiencing is our main priority.

Thank you for your continued patience while we work on this.

Can I be notified when it's fixed so that I can re-send the emails?

To ensure you receive updates regarding your support query and service status, you can manage your notification settings directly within your Greenby dashboard. This will ensure you're alerted as soon as there's a progress update.

Here is how you can check and edit your notifications:

1. Log into your account at greenby.com. 2. Navigate to the Team section and click on DETAILS & USERS. 3. Find your user profile, click on the three dots icon next to it, and select Edit Notifications. 4. You can then toggle the notifications for Team Support and Team Service to ON. 5. Click Edit to save your changes.

While I can't personally send an individual alert, once those settings are active, you'll be notified of updates to this investigation. We also recommend keeping an eye on the dashboard announcements, as we will post a notification there once the authentication fix with BT is fully implemented.

As mentioned, we’re aiming to have this fully resolved within the next week. We appreciate your patience while we work on this.

The AI Chatbot always asks for email address and whether or not with Plusnet. So I gave that info upfront. What's the point of your comment 😠!

The point of my comment (well, one of them) can be summed up as: "And people wonder why they get spam?"

Re: Problems sending to gmail

@rogermhunt  The point that @pvmb is is trying to make is that it is very bad practice and asking for trouble from bad actors and spammers if you openly display your email address on a public forum that the whole world can access.☹️
