Problem with outgoing Emails

Hi

I appear to have a problem with outgoing Emails

I am sending via Outlook ,as I have always done  using the email address I have used for several years, however the issue has only started happening over the past few months

Whenever I attempt to send an Email whilst connected to any other Wi-Fi  or ethernet connection except the one installed in my home I get a rejection from the system administrator which reads something like:-

"Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

      Subject:        xxxxx

      Sent:               02/09/2025 10:26

The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:

    Name (xxxxxxxx@xxxxx.xxx)  on 02/09/2025 10:26

            Server error: '550 <xxxxxxx@xxxxx.xxx> recipient rejected - relay denied'  "

Can you please advise how I can sort this out?

(I have redacted sensitive information in the above)

Re: Problem with outgoing Emails

@GrahamF Put simply, if you are not connected to Plusnet, as you obviously are at hone, you cannot send over the PN  servers - unless you turn authentication on.

Re: Problem with outgoing Emails

OK, but how do I turn Authentication on, and is this a permanent fix or do I have to do it whenever I want to send an Email from a remote location(e.g. when I am staying with my sister or daughter, neither of whom have PN internet)

Re: Problem with outgoing Emails

Fix

@GrahamF in your email client configuration you set the outgoing server check box for 'My server rqeuires authentication. Use the same username & password as for the incoming server.

That setting should work both when at home and away.

Re: Problem with outgoing Emails

After clicking the check box for 'My server requires authentication' I got this warning: WhatsApp Image 2025-09-06 at 11.12.23.jpeg

I clicked yes, but now some emails to contacts with a Gmail address are being flagged as spam and others are taking a while to arrive. Emails to Outlook domains appear to be unaffected. From a quick Google Search it appears Gmail are blocking/filtering emails from servers without the proper verification - which I assume is what's happening here. Any advice on how to get around this problem and still be able to send emails when away from home?

Re: Problem with outgoing Emails

@outcast you should be able to see it now, but it doesnt really help as the server name is not shown

Re: Problem with outgoing Emails

@MisterW  -

Did you just approve an image containing the personal email address of the poster ?

I thought the 'approval' process was supposed to protect users from accidentally revealing personal info on a public forum !

@James_B  - yet another reason why image 'approval' needs to be done by Plusnet staff or AI, and not volunteer customers.

FWIW this isn't a criticism of MisterW,  I'm just pointing out that censorship measures should be the responsibility of paid staff, if the business is using image filtering to avoid any possible legal consequences of the online safety act.

Re: Problem with outgoing Emails

@GrahamF

The certificate error is indicative of the user not specifying the outbound server name correctly as "mail.ic24.net"

Many clients try to get smart and guess at what the server name might be, for example smtp.ic24.net which though is accessible, is not the certified server address, hence the certificate error.

I have unapproved it.

The mods have the means of replacing images with modified versions.  Not sure the SUs can do the same.

Apologies, I was looking at the window containing the cert error and missed the details in the background

@Baldrick1

I was going to simply reply with the Devon equivalent of "Thank You",

until I discovered that it's "cheers, me lover",

which doesn't seem appropriate.  Cheesy
