Unless there is a dramatic improvement, I will get a free email account elsewhere before I have to start paying for this (Greenby should be paying us to beta test it). I shall then end my broadband contract with PN whn it's next up for renewal.

I was thinking similar if this is the shape of things to come. I will stay with Plusnet and find an alternative email provider. I would rather have given my £15 to Plusnet to keep a reliable email account. I've never had a problem in ten plus years,

"I don't understand why Plusnet stopped what was a valued and reliable service."
That will be the cost of providing a reliable email service when your competitors do not.
The writing was on the wall when Plusnet stopped providing email for new accounts.
I do have some sympathy for Plusnet in that unlike some other ISPs they haven't just closed the service, they tried to find someone to take it on. The cost for providing the service in future years also doesn't seem entirely unreasonable (as long as it works well - which I don't consider to be the current state).
If you want "free" email services, I've found Microsoft's Outlook.com "free" tier good and even their "basic" tier isn't bad value. What isn't so good is their free email client but from my experience it works well with other clients. GMail is also not bad but I would say the Microsoft service is, on balance, better (particularly with multiple devices).
