Plusnet email migration and SMTP server

I am a Plusnet broadband customer, however my domain and it’s email is hosted by another service provider, so I do not use any Plusnet email service aside the current SMTP server - "relay.plus.net"

Will the migration mean that the current SMTP server will be "switched off"? If so what should we use instead?

Sorry if this has been answered elswhere, but I could not see anything relating to this situation.

Re: Plusnet email migration and SMTP server

SMTP relay.plus.net will continue to be available.

Why are you not using the SMTP server from your hosted email service ?

Re: Plusnet email migration and SMTP server

Many thanks for the really quick answer.

To be honest it has never occurred to me to consider using the hosting companies SMTP server. For some reason I have been of the belief that at home we had to use the SMTP server "associated" with my broadband/internet provider. I suspect the habit rolled over from when I did have a provider associated email (with Netcom!!) and first had to learn about the existence of SMTP and POP servers. Clearly one should never stop learning.

Thanks again.

Re: Plusnet email migration and SMTP server

If I'm honest, having just moved my email away from using the plusnet servers, I'm seeing mails send and receive quicker.

One difference with using your own email provider to send emails, as opposed to plusnet via your broadband, is that you WILL need to authenticate to send your emails. Typically, it is the same credentials you use to collect your emails.

When you send via plusnet, I believe it's still the case that authentication is optional - the fact that you are sending the email from your broadband "authenticates" you!
