Phising emails increase

It may be pure coincidence but, since Plusnet announced that Email is no longer supported the number of phishing scams across every inbox of my force9 set has increased damatically; before this I got maybe 1 phishing email a month across all 10 mailboxes. Now there are five or six a day distributed across the mailboxes. Has anyone else noticed this and  if the transfer is causative what does this mean for the continuation of the email service by Greenby?

Re: Phising emails increase

Has your email account actually transferred to Greenby? From my experience, the number of spam messages goes up and down over a year, but does tend to increase around now, as people possibly start ordering more stuff online in preparation for Xmas.

Re: Phising emails increase

Where has there been a statement that emails is no longer supported?

It is provision to existing users might well be moving providers, but it is still supported.

Re: Phising emails increase

I'm finding that the usual 'spam emails' are not being filtered out, and (in my case) are being downloaded by my email client. When I go to check my Junk folder via webmail it is empty, this is very unusual.

Yes, I'm getting more spam..... usually adverts for things I don't need.

Re: Phising emails increase

Ok  technically email is still supported. I should have said that email is no longer supported or provided to new customers by the main Plusnet/ EE organisations. It is being/has been transferred to Greenby ; a subsidiary of Enix which, if you look them up on companies house is a small organisation ; reported turnover <200k/ per annum and they have had  default charges outstanding since 2022 ... it does not fill me with confidence. Nevertheless discussion about who provides the support is a red herring... the phenomenon of increase in phishing/spam is still occurring across my inboxes and it has been noticed by others.

No, the transfer of my account is not yet complete.

Re: Phising emails increase

Strange - my spam count has reduced markedly over the past 7-10 days, and I don't let the PN filters anywhere near my emails, as they had a habit, in the past , of  blocking legitimate correspondence.

Re: Phising emails increase

@jab1 How do you stop the emails being sent to the webmail junk folder?

Re: Phising emails increase

@smallblueplanet Not something I can answer - I don't use webmail, rather a mail client with a filter program in front of it.

Re: Phising emails increase

@jab1  So do you check your email via webmail? I also do not filer my email client downloaded emails. However via webmail login I was (a long time back) surprised to find a Junk folder full of emails.

Re: Phising emails increase

No, @smallblueplanet  - I have turned off, many years ago, any Plusnet 'filtering' and use MailWasher to pre-check the validity of any email. As I said, I found the PN filters a little too eager to bin legitimate mail.

I do, occasionally, check into webmail, but all the folders are empty, as I would expect.

Re: Phising emails increase

to @jab1 I also use an email client with default optioons i.e. as far as I can tell the server end phising and spam filtering should still be active

Re: Phising emails increase

@JayMoly I  was talking about the Plusnet spam/virus settings (accessed via your Member Centre). My email client does not - so far as I am aware - have any automatic filtering.

What you experience is very much down to what you have set up:

  • Email client - is that POP3 or IMAP - POP3 only accesses the inbox, not other folders, whereas an IMAP client (including webmail) accesses all folders it is subscribed to
  • SPAM filtering is controlled via the user portal under Manage My Email - is that is set to route spam to the junk folder, it will do so
