I thought I'd give Yahoo mail a try as an alternative to Greenby. But I can't seem to add my Yahoo account to Mac Mail. I've tried various routes but all end with a spinning wheel icon. Beginning to think Yahoo may be one of those companies that Apple won't acknowledge?

@ceresian IIRC, although it is a long time ago now, and on an iPad/iPhone, 'Yahoo' is one of the 'predetermined' options for auto-setup in the Mail app.

And it still is! That's one of the ways I've tried to set Yahoo up but no joy. Also via Mail Preferences and system preferences.
I looked for Yahoo Mail on the App Store and it's not listed there either. Looks like I'll have to try some other email provider.

Sorry I can't help, but my main mail client on my laptop is Thunderbird, and I only have the basic 'Mail' app on iPad/iPhone for emergencies.

I've got Yahoo on the mail app on my iPhone.
I've also got the Yahoo app (which frankly works better), the iPhone mail app isn't great in my experience.
The Yahoo mail app is called "Yahoo mail" on the app store.
I've got a feeling you need to create some sort of "special" password for Apple mail (via the Yahoo website) but it's a while back that I did it.
Overall the best of the "free" mail providers seems to be Microsoft's Outlook from my experience.

The app on the App Store is for mobiles, doesn't even appear on my desktop version.
Mention of Thunderbird reminds me that I haven't tried Yahoo on it, off to have a look!

EDIT using this link https://login.yahoo.com/

Some small progress. I started from 'Add internet account' in System Prefs and followed instructions. I now have a Yahoo inbox in Mail, but it still refuses to connect - "Unable to verify account name or password" I'm hoping this is Greenby mucking about, as it has happened occasionally with my existing accounts.

I would try the link Dan provided and log in using a browser first.
As I said, I also seem to recall needing app specific passwords with Yahoo (generated once in the webmail).

If you search for this problem with Yahoo, the suggestion seem to be use the browser log in for a couple of weeks and then it should let you generate an app password on the device.
To some extent I can see why they have taken this approach but it's a pain.
Other large free email providers are available....
