End Of An Era (error?)

After 27 years of faithfull adherence to Force9 email I've had enough and am throwing all my toys out of the pram!!!

I spent nearly all of yesterday getting to grips with the migration to Greenby after not having any emails for a week on force9 and hence no notification from Greenby that I had been migrated and so trying to sign into get my emails as usual was futile.

Thanks to Mariana (Doncaster's Plusnet help ddesk) for persevering for over an hour she got me established on Greenby. However after some initial success of sending and recieving emails it too has thrown the toys out of the pram and I am not receiving anything since yesterday evening (Saturday 18:20).

The waste of my time has continued for much of this morning as well.

So I am about to start the labourious process of telling all my usual contacts not to use my F9 address in future but to use my gmail address.

What a shambles. Should I expect anything different? Not from an organisation that puts this  on its pages:

Must be very annoying. However, you get what you pay for and while I'm very pleased with my PN service ever since I joined it many years ago I decided at the outset not to bother with free email as soon as I encountered PN's clumsy signup with my convoluted address. I remained with previous supplier BT until they tried to charge for their much-hacked BT Yahoo system then bit the bullet and pay about £3 per month for an independent supplier, with another £3 for my wife. Funny thing is that BT still works though most of my contacts were long since 

I realise that this basic package will not suit those with wider needs though they's available if you pay for them. Gmail seems very good too but I don't like Google snooping. Being a simple soul I did invent a couple of minor problems but these were swiftly sorted by an excellent support team.

Sure -- it's Fastmail, an Australian company. Usual disclaimer, I'm just a satisfied customer over past six years.

+1 for Fastmail, especially if you have your own domain. But even if you choose one of Fastmail's domains (there are plenty to choose from) it works very well, has excellent spam filtering and has lots of settings you can play with, if you like tinkering.

I stuck with the free Plusnet email for many years (I have my own email domain). It then started becoming unreliable and needed a lot of faffing about to try and fix it each time. I suspect that their servers were just getting so old that they wouldn't support newer email protocols and needed bodging each time. I mean, it was free, so I couldn't expect much and obviously they're not going to invest in a free service.

The failures were getting sufficiently frequent (and taking months to fix), that I decided I'd rather pay for a reliable service.

I changed to HostPresto (part of Enix!). I've been with them for 2.5 years now, and I have to say that the email service has been rock solid. The technical support is also very responsive (and helpful).

Their basic PrestoMail1 service (which I use) is a few £ a month.
So I'm a happy customer.

Has anybody managed to use Outlook successfully as a client after migration?

I've spent two days trying all combinations of servers and security settings.  It almost worked once.

Is there any guidance on this anywhere from either PN or Greenby?

I am seriously looking at moving to something like Fastmail.

I've been unable to setup new (or move old ) mailboxes using Outlook since this change was announced - I've tried using two different Computers and they can send but don't populate the Inbox . There seems to be a problem with newer versions of Outlook. On one of the pcs I swapped to Thunderbird and it worked immediately - annoying as all my back ups are in the outlook format.

Try this:

  1. Close Outlook
  2. Open the Control Panel (yes, the Control Panel, NOT Settings)
  3. Use the Mail applet in the Control Panel to configure the correct setting for Outlook
  4. OK out of everything
  5. Open Outlook

Thanks for replies.  Problem solved by creating a new Outlook profile and setting the configuration there.

Mine is an old Free-online account.  I discovered that while you can use the ".idps" as an alias you have to use ".free-online" in the email for the userID.

Still no advice from Greenby about the security options in Outlook...STARTTLS or SSL/TLS ?

Unfortunately, I've already done this (several times) it just appears Modern Outlook doesn't work with the PlusNet servers  - this is the full version BTW not the free one bundled with Windows. I suspect its something to do with timeouts / delay on the server end but can't prove it. The mail box in question can send and it will slowly populate the additional folders but the inbox remains empty (you can even use another email program to move emails into a sub folder and they will shown in the desktop), Glad to hear it worked for rng though Smiley

It's not been so straightforward changing my email address in the sites that I visit as some of them send an email to my F9 account so it should come into webmail at Greenby but when I select View Webmail in My Greenby I get this message RC error: Login failed, please check your credentials.

Patience is a virtue but I'm exasperated at Greenby already.

The AI bot when working is good but it seems to throw a sicky part way through the day so i don't get any further. Come on Plusnet if you are monitoring this forum put some pressure on Greenby to give us the service we expect and deserve after so long with you.

Apologies ... Afraid I spoke too soon....It worked for an hour or two this afternoon and now won't download new emails.  Just hangs on syncing folders.

I would try both .STARTTLS and SSL/TLS 

 

Greenby say to use port 993 and when I set it to this my Thunderbird software says that the correct security setting for this port number is SSL/TLS
