Re: Email not being sent with domain

It would be handy to share those Greenby instructions,  they could help all the others facing the same situation.

Re: Email not being sent with domain

I will copy and paste them later. It’s working now simply because:

1) it is necessary to log into RoundCube with your actual email address, not your Plusnet username.

2) conversely, when logging into the Greenby account portal the Plusnet username has to be used. Therefore don’t access webmail via that because it’s the wrong username. At least that’s what I’ve deduced. Hope it makes sense.

Re: Email not being sent with domain

Here is the support email from Greenby:

The domain ******.co.uk is set up as an alias mapped to your primary domain *****.f9.co.uk.

When setting up your email client or logging in to webmail at https://webmail.greenby.com/:

Username: Use your full email address (e.g. the domain email address).

Password: Use your standard mailbox password.

Please note that the underlying email account corresponds to your Force9 account. If login fails or you are unable to authenticate, you can easily reset your mailbox password via your Greenby dashboard here:

https://greenby.com/email/453811/mailboxes

Once reset, update your email program with the new password alongside your full email address as the username for both incoming and outgoing server authentication.

I'm now on the naughty step with the iCloud and Windows password managers because the password is the same as Force 9 so has been used three times but I've had enough for now so the remedy will have to wait. One good thing is that when I was in the Greenby account portal I took the opportunity to remove some of the aliases that I have used in the past and no longer need.

@SteelCity1

so does that mean that in the greenby portal you have force9 mailbox and a separate mailbox for you domain?

As Yoda might say ... That confirmation, find I expect you will.

It has indeed been confirmed.

The sending email address MUST be configured on the Greenby portal.  That means sending 'from' a third party domain email address via Greenby's services is not permitted.  Time to use the email services of the party who hosts the domain name.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Re: Email not being sent with domain

If "my domain" was hosted by Plusnet there is nothing you need to do.

If the domain is hosted elsewhere and forwards emails to the Plusnet address and you have been in the habit of SENDING using that domain name via Plusnet, that will not now work.  There is fair argument that was an abuse of Plusnet's mail servers by relaying third party emails.

You can only "fix" this by sending "my domain" emails via "my domain"'s hosting provider.

CATCHALL relates to receiving inbound email, not sending emails.

Re: Email not being sent with domain

It is a .co.uk domain that was hosted by plusnet and moved to granby as part of the email migration.

No, only one mailbox but two portals, one for webmail:
https://webmail.greenby.com/  You must login using your domain name email address

and one for the Greenby account:

https://greenby.com/ You must login using your Plusnet username.

You can login to your Greenby account and access webmail from there. I’ve just done it but had to change ‘Edit identities’ because it was showing my f9 username address. I deleted it and entered the domain name address. All good.

Re: Email not being sent with domain

I just tried to login to web as the domain email address using my main plusnet email which did not work. Up to this point I have not had either a separate mailbox or password for the domain email address. as it just gets deilverd to my plusnet mailbox.

In outlook on my pc I have always had my domain email address setup as email address which was working even with Greenby up until this morning (I think due to change overnight to relay.plus.net being proxyd to plusnet). Since then I get the Cannot send the message. Verify the email address in your account properties. The server responded: 550 5.7.1 Unknown sender' which was only resolved by setting my email address to my [email protected] address.

Re: Email not being sent with domain

Fixed. Outgoing mail now goes through Greenby's own gateway and is DKIM-signed for my domain, and no longer goes via the Plusnet avasout servers that Hotmail was blocking.

The changes I made:

  1. My Plusnet mailbox is firstname + surname initial, but I send as firstname@mydomain. My domain is set up by Greenby as an alias of my plus.com domain, so in the Greenby portal I added my first name as an alias on the mailbox. That makes firstname@mydomain a valid sending address.
  2. In my email client's outgoing settings, I stopped using the same login as incoming and set:
    • Server: relay.plus.net (unchanged)
    • Username: my full mailbox address as shown in the Greenby portal (e.g. username@username.plus.com)
    • Password: the mailbox (webmail) password
    • Port: 465, encryption SSL/TLS

I left the incoming settings unchanged. Greenby also had to add a DKIM record for my domain first.
