Re: Email diverting

Hi @Ianp64,

You could always forward the emails along. It's not something we can setup or support from our side of things, but using some email clients you may be able to setup a rule to auto-forward emails to another address. Please keep your mailbox size limit in mind when doing this however, as this won't delete the emails from your Plusnet mailbox.

Re: Email diverting

Hello @Ianp64

A warm welcome to the forum.  It would help to understand what you seek to achieve, for as is oft said, there are many ways to skin a cat and there might not be a straightforward answer if alias email addresses are involved, rather than just simple mailboxes.

If you aim is to desist from using your PlusNet email address over a period of time, then using Gmail's own features might be the simplest solution.  A Google search will provide various guides, such as this Check emails from other accounts - Computer - Gmail Help (google.com)

Once Gmail has "harvested" your Plusnet emails, if the addresses are secondary mailboxes, you could delete them in the Plusnet User portal and then recreate the address as a redirect to your Gmail address.  YOU CANNOT REDIRECT THE PRIMARY EMAIL ADDRESS.

The PlusNet email service does not support redirection / forwarding on a MAILBOX address.

@Ianp64

First login to your Plusnet Member Centre

Then go to Manage My Email

Select the 'Redirects' tab.

Click on the 'ADD NEW REDIRECT' button.

Enter your Plusnet email address that you want forwarded, your destination Gmail address, then click 'ADD'

Re: Email diverting

You cannot have a redirect address which is the same as an existing mailbox address.

You can delete the mailbox and then replace it with a redirect address ... but first you'd need to be sure that you have saved everything already in that mailbox.

It is worth noting that an email address and a mailbox are not the same even if they are generally thought to be.  The address is to do with routing and delivery, the mailbox is where they are delivered to.  In Plusnet's services an address can be one of...

  • a mailbox - stores the mail in a mailbox of the same name within Plusnet's email service
  • a redirect - sends the email to another address and DOES NOT STORE it anywhere associated with this address
  • an alias - is another name for a mailbox address

Attempting to set up a redirect for an existing mailbox will give the following error "The name <existing mailbox> is already in use or is a reserved name. Please select another.".  The guidance on the add redirect page "A redirect will move email from one of your mailboxes into another address (e.g. a personal Hotmail account)." is flawed.

That depends on how the rule is configured / the capability of the client software.  Rules can be configured to do several things ... and then delete the email.

That might result in the mail item being moved to the trash folder which, will be culled of anything deleted more that 8 days previous, without user intervention by PlusNet's weekly house keeping.
