Email accounts no longer automatically included.

I've been bashing my brains out this afternoon trying to help a friend who can't get into a hotmail account. I said, the easiest thing as a stop gap is to use your PlusNet email.

If what the last agent told me is correct then things have changed drastically.

Broadband accounts no longer come with a postmaster@accountname.plus.com and users don't have access to PlusNet email until they have actually created an account themself.

The air around me is just changing back to a more normal colour now. I wish I'd known 5 hours ago. 😊

@longedge

As far as I'm aware new users don't have access to e-mail full stop.

In a similar vein PlusNet no longer offer e-mail only accounts for departing customers.

Re: Email accounts no longer automatically included.

Hi there!

Sorry for the head scratching, just to confirm we don't offer an email service for new customers anymore.

Let me know if you have further queries.

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.

Re: Email accounts no longer automatically included.

No problem, my blood pressure has dropped back to normal now. It's down to me not keeping abreast of the changes/reductions being made.

I have to say that losing access to my PlusNet email account would be pretty catastrophic to me. I made what I now realise was a big mistake in using it for virtually all my contacts when I joined years ago.

I'm hoping that any changes won't come within the short time that's left to me on this earth.

The potentially bad news is there was speculation a while back that PN were planning to withdraw their e-mail servers. Nothing but gossip but you never know.

You perhaps should at least look at what you might do if the worst comes. I would expect that if it happems customers would be given time to move their e-mail accounts.

Yes indeed, I've already got a hotmail address and also a separately hosted account. Probably the thought of having to notify everyone is worse than the reality would be 🙂

Re: Email accounts no longer automatically included.

@longedge

If you have used @youraccount.plus.com then potentially the future is grim.  However, if as a long-standing customer, you added a "free for life" domain name to your account and have used @yourdomain.co.uk (or whatever) then the issue might not be so much of a chore.

@*.plus.com belongs to Plusnet who can do whatever they chose to do with the email address / service but @yourdomain is yours to do whatever (host wherever) you chose to do with (so).

If you want to avoid "hitting a brick wall" you could consider a (long?) phased migration of preferred correspondence email addresses.  Hit the ones you know about now (change you contact email address ... which might not change your logon identity to third party services) ... and then change the less obvious ones when you receive contact messages to the old address.

Personally, I never did use @myaccount.plus.com so all I would need to do, is to move my domain hosting to a different provider.  The challenge there is finding one which offers the same rich functionality as the Plusnet service but does not want an arm and a leg for each mailbox - I have a lot of email boxes and dozens of aliases.
