Difficulty Creating New Mailbox: Add Button Obscured

I needed to create a new mailbox for a family member. When I open the "Add a new mailbox" tab, I can enter the name for the mailbox and the password, but the bottom of the screen is obstructed by the "About us", etc. footer. I can see from the page source that there should be an "Add" button, but I can't see it.

I tried initially using Chrome on Windows 11 with the above symptoms. I also tried Edge on the same PC, but that was worse, with more of the page being obscured. After reading a related post by @MisterW I changed the password so it included at least one character of each type and then pressed Tab, and Enter. I got a redrawing circle and the mailbox was created!

I hope that helps.

Resize the browser window and then restore / maximise it.

In some browser rendering engines, the black footer area overlays the page content until a layout re-draw is forced.

Re: Difficulty Creating New Mailbox: Add Button Obscured

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, including minimising, maximising, restoring, but none of those worked.

I created the new mailbox, but I can't log in. I reset the password (same as before, with UPPER and lower case letters, numbers and special symbols, but even after waiting for more than 30 minutes, I am getting Login Failed errors.

Re: Difficulty Creating New Mailbox: Add Button Obscured

Just out of interest, I have gone to the final stage (entering the password) on a 16" laptop with the resolution set at 1368 x 768 (16:9). At no point did the footer interfere with entering details.

Re: Difficulty Creating New Mailbox: Add Button Obscured

I did get a lot of footer resizing all over the place, but couldn't get one that didn't obscure the footer. I'm running Chrome on Windows 11 with the screen set to 1920 by 1080. Chrome is not normally full-screen, just more than three quarters.

Drat, now I'm getting Error 403 on that page.

What screen size -diagonal - is your computer? With that resolution, I am surprised you haven't encountered problems on other sites.

Re: Difficulty Creating New Mailbox: Add Button Obscured

OK, the Login Failed errors in Control Panel Outlook were down to the SMTP security not being enabled. I'm not sure if that was suggested by @Townman or @MisterW. Thanks to either/both. I fixed that in Control Panel and the initial test succeeded before I tried to start Outlook Classic. However, that won't start (again) now.

I think the screen is an LG 21.5 inch? Display Settings says LG IPS FULLHD, using an nVidia GeForce GT 730 adapter.

I did look at the page source, but was only looking for a button, not for the layout stuff (technical term).

Re: Difficulty Creating New Mailbox: Add Button Obscured

I have never had a screen that big, so I can't comment. does the documentation for the screen recommend a resolution? - sometimes they do, but not always. I had experiment with my laptop to find one that avoided the need to scroll.

Re: Difficulty Creating New Mailbox: Add Button Obscured

Fix

@dbriggs1950

The settings you've mentioned ought not to have been an issue - it could have been an Outlook process error

Outlook not starting is a common issue - you click the icon and the cursor spins but nothing happens.  Try the following, each in turn...

  • Use task manager to kill off any residual Outlook processes
  • Reboot the computer
  • Start Outlook in safe mode (Google it if you do not know how)
  • Repair Microsoft365 (ditto)

@jab1

21" that's tiny - my panel is 43" - avoids back and shoulder ache, but also good for big spreadsheets.

This is the maximum resolution listed for the monitor and it was auto-selected by Windows 10 when I rebuilt the PC at 64-bits, before I upgraded to Windows 11.

Re: Difficulty Creating New Mailbox: Add Button Obscured

@Townman I know 😉, but my 15.6"  (sorry, not 16") is perfectly good for what I use it for these days, although I did have a 24" (I think) CRT  monitor when I had my desktop.

Re: Difficulty Creating New Mailbox: Add Button Obscured

Thanks for that!

I was about to reboot, but I found a Microsoft Outlook process in Task Manager doing nothing. Killed that, clicked the icon, "Microsoft Outlook couldn't start, do you want to use web mail", clicked No and it started. Took a little while, but it has opened the new mailbox no problem. Job done (till next time).
