Creating Outlook account linked to Plusnet webmail

Hi,

I am on Windows 10 and when I try to create a Microsoft Outlook email account linked to my Plusnet email account it doesn't synch and tells me to try again and that I may need an app password.

The troubleshooting gives the following information for the administrator -

{"SessionId":"af444571-0b27-b148-a43c-a7ff06dc803e","Timestamp":1757588122988,"Error":"INVALIDCREDENTIALS INTERACTIONREQUIRED"}

Any ideas folks/Plusnet?

Re: Creating Outlook account linked to Plusnet webmail

It's possible to use outlook to collect email from Plusnet's email service but it's a very manual setup.

Don't let Outlook make any decisions about the setup.

See if this helps

By the way, use IMAP rather than POP.

@markhawkin

If I convert Outlook 2019 to IMAP from POP3 will that affect the existing messages in the Outlook folders?

Re: Creating Outlook account linked to Plusnet webmail

Yes.

If you have collected the messages using POP3 then (most likely) they have gone from the Plusnet servers.

While it would have been better to set up as IMAP I would be very cautious making a POP3 change to IMAP if you have collected the emails.

What do you see in the webmail?

Re: Creating Outlook account linked to Plusnet webmail

Hi, Further to my question I solved the problem with tips from members of the Plusnet Community. When I looked at the settings suggested by Outlook for IMAP set up they were slightly different to the recommended settings on the Plusnet website. Namely the outgoing port on Outlook was recommending SMTP.plus.net but the Plusnet site said it should be relay.plus.net

When I put the Plusnet setting in the whole thing took off and set itself up. Now it is up an running fine.

In summary for IMAP I found the following works when setting up Outlook and linking it to Plusnet webmail:

Incoming port                           imap.plus.net

Port                                          993

Secure connection type            SSL/TLS

Outgoing Port                           relay.plus.net

Port                                          587

Secure connection type           StartTLS

This worked for me. Hope it works for you if you are struggling to set up Outlook Smiley

Re: Creating Outlook account linked to Plusnet webmail

Using smtp.plus.net instead of relay.plus.net in itself would NOT have caused the reported issue for the SMTP outbound server.

Invalid credentials means that the the user name / password combination and inbound server configuration were wrong.

Using Outlook's determination for the SMTP server name with everything else correct would simply result in a security certificate warning.
