Authentication failure with Greenby Force9 imap

I look after the computer for a good friend who used to used Plusnet and he has 3 force9 email addresses that he still uses. Some years ago he got FTTP but at that time Plusnet did not support FTTP so he had to move to BT but kept his force9 email addresses.

Without any warning or prior notice late last week his email just stopped working. He contacted Plusnet support who put him onto Greenby and he has paid for a years subscription.

Let us say his name is Fred Smith.

Greenby webmail is now working and he logs into it with smith1@smith1.f9.co.uk, but we cannot get Outlook to pick up his emails.

With the curl  diagnostics ( Thank you @Townman) I have not found any username that works. I always get login denied. I am using the same password as the webmail login. I have tried various combinations of force9.net f9.co.uk etc.

Plusnet telephone support say thay cannot help, Greenby don't appear to have any support they just point you to Plusnet support. We can't raise at ticket as do not have a plusnet account.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Tim

Re: Authentication failure with Greenby Force9 imap

When trying the curl diagnostics, all you need is the user name/ID part of the address - e.g. "smith1" above.

My Force9 account has been migrated to Greenby and I get... (Note: I used -u username:password on the Linux command line, if you just give the username, you'll be prompted for the password interactively)

root@linux-nas-2:~# curl -v imaps://imap.force9.net -u [username]:[password]

Re: Authentication failure with Greenby Force9 imap

@adflyer  You are not strictly correct - the userID should be the email address.  The fact that it fails indicates that there are issues with the Greenby’s authentication mechanism.

@Tim2000 There are reports of odd issues (I’m informed on “some” accounts) that email address credentials are not working correctly.  F9 is required in place of Force9 or accountname or accountname+mailbox

Can you please PM the account name to @plusnettony .

@Townman I merely reported what works for me - offering a suggestion to @Tim2000 so that he might get it working too, as he requested.

I believe the webmail f9/force9 issues were resolved yesterday. Anyone still having issues, please let me know.

Re: Authentication failure with Greenby Force9 imap

Thank you for your reply.

Account details sent by PM

Since my 1st post thinks have moved on , but I am getting very intermittent resuls that I do not understand.

I have had outlook picking up emails, but then later without changing any setting it fails. I wonder if there is a lockout on the server so that the account gets locked for X hours if there have been login failures.

The only login I can get to work interactively at greenby.com is the overall management account lastname1@lastname1.f9.co.uk, I have been unable to login directly to any of the 3 mailboxes.

I am out today but this evening we will both carefully go through the outlook setting to make sure they are correct.

I am accessing his PC remotely and the font size I see is so small to be almost unusable so the possibility of a typo exists.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Authentication failure with Greenby Force9 imap

In reply to

"You are not strictly correct - the userID should be the email address"

This appears to be becoming a generalised view (or has been a generalised view for some time? - which goes beyond providers of e-mail; think how your account with your energy provider is configured). And quite possibly a failure in some software design models.

N.B. I'm using another e-mail provider unrelated to Plusnet and Greenby. However, the whole auto-setup in some(?) e-mail clients appear to be working on the premise that "the userID should be the email address". Which isn't always correct.

Have a good day (it beats having a bad one).

Re: Authentication failure with Greenby Force9 imap

@plusnettony  I think I am seeing the same issues on my account which was migrated on Monday.

Since Monday 10am ish, none of our email mailboxes have been able to be accessed. Seemingly failing authentication. This is from multiple clients (including Outlook 365 Classic, and Outlook for Android), multiple mailbox addresses on the same account. Also same accounts are failing to login to F9 Webmail, and also failing to logon on webmail.greenby.com (login failure). I've tired username as both email address and account+mailbox formats. F9 Webmail and various desktop and mobile clients were working fine last week for all accounts, but suddenly stopped working this week at migration point (Outlook for Android broke 10 days ago randomly and never got fixed), I've also just tried the curl diagnostics too.

I can however access Greenby portal and access each mailbox via the "view webmail" button next to each mailbox... so the emails are there and migrated, and working in some form. Just none of the username permissions stuff working any longer in any mail client or webmail.

I'll PM you my user details, would be pleased if you can have a poke as we've been without email now for 48 hours, and have finally got this far, to (I think) prove it is a auth failure like mentioned in this thread.

Shout if you need more info.
