Forum avatar broken

My avatar is dead. It's hosted on the plusnet hosting service and yet when visiting the image url directly, it works perfectly.

I can only assume that the 3rd party supplier has decided to block hotlinking as when refreshing the forum page and looking at the http headers, my forum avatar is requested but gets no response at all - the server just seems to close the connection.

@bobpullen can you help?

Thanks,

7

Re: Forum avatar broken

Seems to be working for me @7up though I am using my Mac Mini.

Screenshot attached.

EDIT: I notice it changes each time I refresh a page, are you using some kind of script or does Lithium support different Avatars (like they do the spell checker - laugh).

EDIT 2: Trying to get in before this clandestine 15 minute edit limit, refreshing the page I get this and this:

Re: Forum avatar broken

That's interesting that it's showing up for you but not me. My browser doesn't even get a reply in the http headers.

Yes there is a php script in use to provide random avatars (i get bored easily lol). My current theme is stargate but i also have Knight Rider and British Rail too. Plus a general theme which just picks anything at random.

I did post the source for the script years ago as a few members got upset at the thought of me being able to track them etc - you know the internet conspiracy drill.. Anyway if you can find that post with the source code you're welcome to use it.

Re: Forum avatar broken

This is the http headers from my browser - note that there is no reply at all from the server unlike all the other requests you see on the left (including those that let you run your own SQL DATABASE CODE on the forum server... oops... how did plusnet allow that?

Fix

Oddly my avatar shows up on the other PC. Odd. Clearly a local problem with the other machine. I shall mark this topic fixed..

Re: Forum avatar broken

Well this has turned out to be a chrome update gotcha. It's decided that because the plusnet forum is https, my avatar must be too - even though the forum html source clearly provides an img src of "http://". The plusnet hosting my avatar is on doesn't support https - only http.

So google has basically dictated that they're going to break the look of a lot of the internet by assuming they can just switch to https for every image a page specifies in the html.

Confirmed it with chromes DevTools. I get error about a ssl cipher mismatch - which will obviously happen when a server doesn't support https.

Thanks for breaking the internet, love you too google!!!

Re: Forum avatar broken

Google's increasingly pedantic position on HTTPS support in Chrome has been flagged for some time, so no real suprise.

Re: Forum avatar broken

Thanks for letting us know @7up

Strange and interesting problem. Good of you to let us know. Been years since I used an avatar on the PlusNet forums so I don't know anything about them.

I was going to test it on my PC, as I have both the Mac and my PC in my room, so it would have been a case of swapping some cables around. Though I would only be testing it on IE as I have never used Chrome. So I wouldn't have noticed any problem.
