I recently reverted to Firefox after a 2 month trial of Chrome.  Even when I was using Chrome, and still today using Firefox I had to log in on the portal, then log in to the forums. Is this usual, or, why can't I just log in once?  Even setting up the stay logged in  option in my control panel does not work.  Any advice please?

The forums and portal are totally separate as regards logging in.
The reason is fairly straightforward - when you log into the portal you are accessing all your account related information and hence it needs to be totally secure.
On the forums the moderators have a fair bit of access which cannot be allowed on the portal
