Calendar

What was it included in the design for? What purpsoses was this part of the design originally intended to fulfill?
If it isn't going to serve any useful purpose (other than letting people know that Plusnet acknowledges the dates of Hallowe'en and Christmas Day and that Microsoft Patch Tuesdays land on Tuesdays) then it is clutter. Why not swap it for a link to a list of Microsoft patch release dates?

Re: Calendar

It normally has a lot more in it.  September and October are very quiet.  I presume that's because someone hasn't had time to update it (Tommo I think it is).  If you look back to August there is something happening most days.  The idea of it was to plot out things that might effect peoples usage, such as Patch Tuesdays when loads of people download from Microsoft at the same time, or when the Olympics where on iplayer, and loads of people where watching.

Re: Calendar

I can't help feeling that people knew the Olympic games were on without having to refer to the Plusnet Calendar.

Re: Calendar

What about the launch of the next version of a popular game.  Some people have no interest in gaming and wouldn't know that it is due to be released, but may be effected by the extra traffic on the network due to that game.

Re: Calendar

For the infrequency of games with such a significant effect on the network, it is more appropriate to have a service status announcement.

Re: Calendar

The idea of the calendar is to try and track anything that could have an "exceptional" influence on the traffic on our network, that could be something fairly small like a software release, something big like the Olympics, something we need a new signature adding for like a new game or something that causes a decrease in traffic like an England football game on the BBC or ITV.
Due to lack of time I've neglected it a little recently but I've filled a few things in this evening. If anyone else sees of thinks of things then the Internet Activity Forum is there to record it and we can add it to the calendar.

Re: Calendar

ok, I've got a couple. Can you add the week that I'm on holiday. I'm a really heavy user and I reckon my absence will cause an imbalance in the servers which may affect the network. Also, you could add to any day that ends in a Y that the network will be used by Plusnet customers trying to use the net. This has a significant impact on network performance too, more so than any other calendar entries.
I'm not convinced it's a worthwhile exercise but I can see what it's meant to be for now that I can see some entries. I also appreciate that you're doing this in your own time and so my argument that it's a waste of Plusnet resources takes a monster kick to the kerb.
I may have lost this argument but I leave with minor injuries and high morale (or maybe that's just the coffee kicking in) and I'll be back another day to niggle on a trifling matter again.

I'm off to bed soon so you can have my bandwidth. Enjoy it but remember to put it back before morning or it will turn into a pumpkin.

Re: Calendar

I think you ought to have the 30th and 31st January as heavy useage dates - last 2 days of HMRC tax return filing!
