Re: Peak time latency spikes

So I get the impression that the reconfiguration of the line cards on the PCL gateway routers has made a significant improvement.
@Digital care team
Any definitive conclusions yet from the data gathered last night?
As an aside, I've been on a PTN gateway (ptn-ag04) for the past week or so and seen no slow downs. I understand it hasn't been "reconfigured" yet, but I still saw an improvement in my TBB graph last night.
Thursday night. Nobody home/no internet usage:

Compared with Tuesday night. Also nobody home/no internet usage:

So I seem to have benefitted from the changes, even though my gateway hasn't been updated.

There was a small dip around 22.00 but nowhere near the ones I've been experiencing they have been going down to under 10Mbps
Still on same gateway atm will check tonight to see what results I get

Interesting. I also saw a small dip at 22:00 though I'm on pcl-ag06. I wonder what happened:
22:00  46.09
20:00  50.29

Re: Peak time latency spikes

[quote=Chris]Dropping from 6.9Mb to 6.7Mb really isn't a huge drop and isn't a significant change. I'm sorry to say but that's well within the acceptable range of speeds for a broadband service.
I'm not particularly worried about it until it drops below about 6.0Mbps
I just wanted to point out for the record, that until 09:30 on 7th March, my latency had been in the order of 18 or 19ms and my speed tests were nearly always in the range 6.95 to 7.15Mbps.
Something at that moment, as captured on my TBB graph for that day did NOT appear in my routers connection log, and from that moment on my results have been consistently 10ms slower and at least  485Kbps lower than before.  Whatever that change was, is NOT as a consequence of my IP profile changing, and my ADSL modem connection is extremely stable and has exactly the same margins, attenuation, sync speed, etc, as it has always had.
So I am merely pointing out that something that was not down to my local connection (and therefore must presumably be in either the PN or BT network) has changed.  Whatever that change was ALSO altered the symptoms that my connection experiences in the evenings, before I always had excellent speed test results but the latency went to ridiculous levels,  but ever since the latency goes up a bit but the speed test results are either 500Kbps slower than before or they have collapsed to an unusable level.
So I am just trying to highlight that I can identify a very specific moment in time which you might be able to correlate to events that you know about on the network, because whatever that difference is has made my connection behave differently under these peak time difficulties.
Therefore I am not complaining, just wanting to help.
Just for the record my result this morning is -
20CN on 'pcl-ag01'

I just realized from this result that it is a bit odd that the difference in speed results is EXACTLY 500Kbps  !
That seems a nice round number ? - is it a clue ?, what change would lose 10ms and 500Kbps ?
@Anotherone - I get identical results from http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ and http://www.speedtest.net/.
When I have been posting results in this thread I have generally run a speedtest on BOTH of those tools (to check for consistency), but I tend to post here the results from http://www.speedtest.net/ as that shows the PING value as well as the speed.
I have been using http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ to take results every 5 minutes - because that tool has a convenient graph which is helpful in plotting the trend of how speeds throughout the evening are progressing.

Re: Peak time latency spikes

Your last comments are very true, exactly what I've found, and because I hadn't used it for a while, I hadn't made use of the graphing. Perhaps it's working so well because it's now under-used  Huh

Re: Peak time latency spikes

It's early doors on those changes.  The Network team are continuing the config roll outs today to include the PTN and PTW gateways.  We definitely saw some maxing on those line cards on the new graphining in PTW and PTN so I'm actually quietly confident!
HOWEVER
Last night was Thursday.  As we all know, Thursday is the new Friday, so lots of people were out drinking instead of streaming so traffic levels were lower.  We've seen better performance on Thursdays/Fridays/Saturdays all the way through this, so I don't feel we can really saw we've fixed this till Sunday and Monday night at the earliest.  Like I said, I'm quietly confident though!

Thanks for the update, Kelly. Fingers crossed! I guess you'll all be looking forward to getting back to Thursday nights out  Wink

Re: Peak time latency spikes

Not too shabby on ptn-ag02...

Going to be in and out until about 8, and I'll test again then.

Re: Peak time latency spikes

Your speeds seem very erratic, most of the issues in this thread are resolved by a gateway hop however yours doesn't seem to be. I'm starting to think there is something else wrong but we can't see anything when testing your line.
